Can someone recommend a bed bug exterminator in NYC? Someone good who won't rip me off and will get the job done? Live in Manhattan in Murray Hill.

I, too, want to know the answer to this. I live in New York City and my girlfriend lives in Westchester; now we both have them. Government sites say to find a licensed exterminator, but I've had no luck with searches so far.

I cannot personally vouch for these exterminators, but my fiance is currently using Arrow and he lives in Manhattan. They seem great, but after one treatment a week ago, I am still getting bitten almost nightly. Another supposedly good one is Assured Environments. Both Arrow and Assured Environments were rated as top PCOs in NYC in recent years by New York Magazine.

    Good luck...

My building in Brooklyn used Suburban Pest Control. I think they have offices in Yonkers but serve the NYC area. They seemed to know what they're doing. They followed the procedures that have been touted as standard. Two treatments, two weeks apart, the guy was in my apartment for over two hours the first time. I can't tell you if it worked, because I've only been back to pack up my belongings b/c I moved to a new apt.

    Good luck,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Arrow Exterminating. Just outta curiosity do you know which insecticides were of choice in there service? I"m asking cause you stated that your still getting bit after the treatment even after a sustained period of time. How long has it been since your last treatment? How many treatments have you had and how many rooms is the problem in, what was their original diagnosis?

Hi. I would not say my experience with Arrow has been negative - they seem very thorough and knowledgeable, and most certainly professional. We have only had one treatment, and that was last Thursday. They are coming over again to take a look today, and probably schedule another treatment.

When they did the initial inspection, they found one casting and some possible fecal matter on an item in the nightstand. However, when they came to do the treatment last week, they were STUMPED b/c they couldn't find ANYTHING else. They thought for sure they'd be in the box spring (the mattress was already encased b/c of my fiance's allergies), but lo and behold, they weren't there, either. I think these suckers must really be deeply hidden. We are going to try isolating the bed tonight and see what happens. Other than that, I think only time will tell.

Do you have a contract or some kind of guarentee dealing with arrow? If you do then by all means give em another call. You can ask Arrow about monitoring the room or apartment to possibly find out the areas were there coming from. I"m suprised that after one treatment that your still having so many bites. Do you know what they used as far as pesticides for techniques to solve the problem? Does your room have a lot of cracks, picture frames, or peeling wallpaper or paint? Do you ever observe live activity or just wake up with bites? What part of your body is being bitten the most? Were is your bed in relation to the bites? Did they treat the frames/backboards/and iner part of the bed with a crack and crevice residual? Did they give you any labels following the treatment of the chemicals they used?

Hi, and thanks for following up. Yes, we have a 3 month guarantee with the PCO, which is great. I will ask them about monitoring. I went bite free Thursday and Friday nights, and was beginning to be hopeful and feel more relaxed, but alas, this morning woke up with two spots on the back of my hand. They did not actually come over Friday, but instead scheduled a visit for Monday. All I will have to show them is my new bites, and if my dermatologist has feedback form my biopsy that morning, I can share his opinion, too.

We have not seen ANY live activity, found any fecal spotting or castings ourselves, although I did have a dog alert to the bugs in my apartment last month before I moved into my fiance's apartment last week (had already been waking up with bites at his apartment, too, though, and only brought over freshly laundered, sealed clothing and kitchenware when I moved in). I saw the bugs inside my two week old mattress pad after the dog alerted to them (gross). We are fairly certain we both brought them back to our respective apartments after exposure in a bed and breakfast in Ireland in October, although we tried to be *so* careful upon our return (throwing out suitcases, etc.).

My bites have appeared on my arms (entire length), back, chest, neck, waist, and now my hands, too. I have a skin biopsy scheduled for tomorrow. Not sure exactly how helpful it will be, but I am desperate. No blood stains on sheets, etc., although we are sleeping on light blue sheets, not white.

The room has some cracks around the baseboards, but those were sprayed thoroughly. Should they be sealed off? If so, won't that just push the buggers into another apartment? In regards to the bed, we have it pushed away from the wall, and we got rid of the treated wooden frame and replaced it with a simple metal frame on casters. I had thought about isolating the bed, but my better judgment tells me not to, so that they don't try to start getting to us in different parts of the apartment.

The PCO gave us all of the labels after treatment. They used: Bedlam, Delta Dust, Microcare, Suspend, and Kicker.

Phew - long post and a lot of info.

It is extremely common to still be bitten one week after treatments. This alone does not mean your PCO did not do a good job. You should see a reduction in bed bugs after each treatment, but definitely keep getting treated.

Another factor: most PCOs can't solve your problem if neighbors are infested and are continuing to send bed bugs your way. Make sure the landlord is having adjacent units professionally inspected, and consider discussing ways of sealing your home's cracks with PCO and landlord.

Sage advice, thanks. In terms of neighbors, we own, so we would need to inform neighbors so they can have their units treated, as there is no landlord. When asked, the PCO indicated they did not think we needed to tell the neighbors. However, my fiance did tell the building super.
