Eucalyptus Fiber Sheets!!??
(5 posts)-
A friend sent me the link to this short article in Fast Company magazine.
My initial response is that if you put a live, warm, breathing human in those eucalyptus fiber sheets, a hungry bed bug is going to bite.
What do you all think? Am I right? I will say, I admire the innovative thinking.
However, you know the term "greenwashing"? Could this be a form of "bugwashing????"

The analogy I use about why repellents are ineffective against bed bugs is this:
If you're really, really hungry, and you smell your favorite food, will the scent of something unpleasant be strong enough to keep you from walking through a place that smells bad to get to the tantalizing smell of food on the other side?
I don't think sheets with repellent characteristics are going to work whether they're laced with eucalyptus (safe but not effective) or DEET (ineffective and unsafe).

This is absolutely fantastic. NoBugs, you can "mothball" this site. The BB war is over, we've won!
Here's the press release this is all based on:
http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/eucalyptus-sheets-and-recycled-plastic-curtains-greening-the-hotel/OK, so a textile company is working with a fiber mill on a reformulated version of "tencel" a eucalyptus-based fabric. Tencel has a nice, silky feel, but in the past, tencel was not durable enough for institutional use. The fabric company ***hopes*** that the new version is up to the task and is testing.
And because bedbugs is big news, get this. The company dropped 40 BBs on two different fabrics, theirs and "regular". The result was that fewer BBs colonized the fabric. Wow! How many fewer BBs colonized the tencel? Enough to matter? Why no specific %s in the the PR? How many times was the test repeated? Any other variables (including chance) ruled out?
Finally, in a hotel, BBs on the sheets and pillow-cases are not the problem, as these are stripped often, if not daily! The BBs harboring out of sight-out of reach are the problem. So, if these new sheets actually work, they solve now problem.
BFF nailed it. "Bugwash". -
I have replied to the comments on that site which I hope will be approved. Although I feel its got good green credentials as a product the bed bug claims seem more snake oil than eucalyptus oil and in reality may spread and infestation further resulting in increased chemical control.
I had a series of email from a pillow manufacturer today of a similar vane but luckily they understood that dust mites and bed bugs were different by the 4th email exchange.
