I live in an apartment complex and recently found out my neighbors on one side have bed bugs. I am on an end-unit, and I am moving in December, but I am afraid I will get bed bugs too. I already have an encasement on my mattress from bed, bath and beyond for dust mites. Is this okay for bed bugs too? I am not bringing any of my bedroom furniture with me when i move (as it is ikea I'm just going to chuck it and not take my chances) but I will be bringing my mattress and box spring (can't afford new ones). Please help, I;ve been reading these forums and need to learn what to do on my own to prevent getting bed bugs because I cant afford treatment. Thanks

i bought mine from the national allergy place. do that. i needed the packaging label to say bedbugs specifically or i would not feel comfortable.

Protect-A-Bed is the best thing going, according to recent tests.

I have National Allergy encasements with the zippers taped, but if I were buying encasements now, I'd go with Protect-A-Bed.

have you considered caulking? many bedbuggers have done so to attempt to seal off any entry point into their apartment from other apartments (i'm one of them). it's no guarantee, but it could potentially help!

i used silicone caulk all around the baseboards of my apartment, sealing any cracks. i also sealed the gap where the radiator pipe comes up through the floor using high-heat caulk.

another thing many people have done while living in a building with bedbugs is to have a pco dust the inside of your electrical outlets with Diatomaceous Earth (also referred to as DE, do a search on the forums on this, there are safety precautions you should be aware of if you intend to use DE in your home). This can help reduce the chances of bbs entering your apartment through the electrical outlets, from what i understand.

personally i would also avoid common areas in the building, such as seating spaces, and maybe even the laundry room (although i realize that this can be difficult).

that's all i can think of for now, but if i remember anything else i'll come back to post again later.
