Elizabeth Cady Stanton slept in a carriage to avoid bedbugs
(14 posts)-
For those of you unfamiliar, Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a pioneer of the Women's Suffrage movement in the United States during the 1800s and was very close with Susan B Anthony who also worked on the women's movement.
In any case, Mrs. Stanton while touring the countryside apparently had a row with bedbugs in one of the places she was staying and tried to sleep in a carriage to avoid them:
"..owing to the general opinion among pioneers that a certain species of insect must necessarily perambulate the beds in a young civilization." While trying to avoid them she slept in a "springless carriage," only to end up being surrounded by "those long neck black pigs" who decided to use the carriage as a scratching post.
One other movement leader also had to deal with bedbugs, but I can't find the passage now. If I find it I will post it just for the heck of it.
This has been a message from your friendly neighborhood procrastinating history grad student. I should probably go back to working on something. :)

Not like it's that time of the semester . . . one that encourages procrastination or anything . . .
Still, I actually found that really fascinating.

cool! I am glad somebody did. I came across it while doing some research for the suffragette movement. I should have marked the other reference. I think it was Lucy Stone complaining in a letter to someone about how horrific they are. Both references were in the same book so I found that even more interesting for some reason.

What are "long neck black pigs?"??!!
Something new to worry about? :)) -
'Fear - I think they are actually a type of pig. Just something for You, and only you, to worry about!!!
Procrastination indeed!!! Buy your presents yet, eh?

Waves to Adele...glad to see you are still around even if you're clear of bb's.
My alarm clock woke me up this morning and I was in the midst of a horrendous bed bug dream...it took me a good 60 seconds to realize that it was actually a dream/nightmare.
But it really shook me up for the remainder of the morning! -
aaaaawwww 'Fear I'm sorry - it's so hard. SpideyJG has a name for this period - the Fugging Post bed Bug Hebbie Jeebies...
I am not declaring myself free yet - in fact my box spring encasement ripped and I got mildy re-infested again - KillerQueen had to come back and I got a new encasement. So far so good - I am getting rid of the bed this weekend and buying a new one - I can't risk being one tear away from another infestation
so it goes on....
I'm glad to see that you have a sense of humor, though - that's important

I hope you are at least getting ready for Christmas, I think Kate (Itchy-Scratchy) is right - life goes on

I love that someone added "Suffragette City" to the tags. AWESOME.

You think this might be the culprit?

Bugginsocal, They are cute! Much rather have one of those than bb's ANY day! According to the info on that site they are kind of friendly and docile. At least if one bit you, you could turn it into bacon, just kidding.
Adele, was it the expensive allerzip protect-a-bed encasements that ripped? I originally had the cheap vinyl encasements that ripped within days, even though we had duct taped anything sharp on the bed frames. I replaced them with the allerzips and went over everything with more duct tape. My mattresses are so damn heavy that it takes 2 strong people to even move them, so not an easy thing to check. I hope your new encasements keep those damn bb's in! -
Hey there "Fear - sorry for the late delay in responding. You know it was the box spring encase ment that ripped - that thing is made out of tissue paper. I bought a vinyl encasement and that seems to work for now. Next week I will buy a new bed I Just want this one outta here and not have to worry about reinfestations again
so right now I also bought new encasements for the new bed (it just never ends with these things) and am waiting on the new ones to arrive before I buy the bed

Just trying to have a little fun. -
It is said that hundreds of years ago, people used to travel with a pig they'd put into their inn bed, before going to sleep, so bed bugs would bite the pig instead of them.
(I severely doubt this worked. Please do not try this!)
