I can't find a logical reason why a good long cooking in the Packtite wouldn't render a comforter bug free.

I wanted to ask others out there what your experience has been, also the experts out there, your feedback as always, is highly valued. I've just started putting Packtited books on shelves and clothes in drawers after 6 months no bugs.

So down comforters in Packtite? What's your opinion.

    Thanks!

Bed bugs can be dormant for up to 18 months! It is possible they could still be dormant in your books and clothes even after 6 months. I think that Packtite works, but I would just be skeptical that the bedbugs would be dead after 6 months.

Guru .. they don't go dormant. And they don't live 18 months. You're user name is tricky ... your sales pitch is not.

I have not tried it. Theoretically it should work.

The best way to be certain is to get the temp probe into the center of the comforter (or at least into the thick part of the comforter) and test the temps reach the required levels. This might require stitching up a hole but would probably bring peace of mind. This goes for stuffed animals too -- I expect them to take longer, but it should work.

Alternatively, maybe you can run it long.

    BedBugGuru,

Are you reading what people write, or just rushing to post as many responses as you can in a few minutes?

I think hoo2677's point was that s/he was going to Packtite the comforter to make sure any bed bugs inside are DEAD.

From what I have heard they can live for upto 18 months without any blood meal. Well if they are fed then they keep reproducing and their "effective" life span is much longer. Is that correct ?

My understanding is that the "18 months without food" idea predates the current bed bug epidemic, and may have been true once but is no longer valid based on more recent data. No one has ever claimed bed bugs lived longer than that with food, to my knowledge.

Wih food, of course, bed bugs can keep reproducing.

More recent studies suggest a much shorter lifespan for an unfed adult bed bug but don't have a citation for this.

Update: here's a citation and more info. from Doug.
