Does anyone know what a "carpet mite" is?
(6 posts)-
I just started a great new consulting gig and I noticed there were the insect sticky traps everywhere. I did not say anything because I had not noticed a problem at all in the area I was sitting in
However after about 10 days or so of sitting in the same area I started to feel things crawling on my feet (in sandals)
I asked my colleagues why they had sticky traps everywhere and if the place had issues with insects and they told me that there were "carpet mites"
I looked on the Internet and could not find "carpet mites" - there are carpet beetles and of course dust mites but what the heck are "carpet mites"?
in the meantime the facilities manager is treating the area around my desk again. I hope these carpet mites are not a euphemism for bed bugs
please advise

Did you find out anything else?
I am dealing with what I think is mites, and one feature of my problem creature (too small to see) is that it collects on the floor in places where my feet spend a lot of time, i.e. the floor under the table where my computer is at home. If I don't wear socks and shoes, they sting my feet and ankles.
I'd like to know for one thing if the use of the traps produced any benefit. Haven't encountered this approach in what I read. Mostly I come across advice about vacuuming and spraying floors with various preparations. If you're in or near NY, I'd also like to know if the people at this office found a professional to help, and who it was.

PS from what I have found so far, the likeliest kind of mite to be bothering people indoors is a bird mite of some kind.

Hello Earthangel - Killerqueen graciousy responded to me (as he always does no matter how busy he gets) and told me that there is no such thing as a carpet mite
I don't know what problem they had at that office as my gig is thankfully over now and I don't have to worry about it
But if you are feeling things biting and stinging around your feet you should contact a PCO to have it checked out

Thanks, Adele, I am aiming to do that - one reason I'm on this site, besides educating self about bug identification, is to research PCOs as I really really really need the right kind of person here!!

A PS - if you know or are a PCO in New York City who will help with mites, please PM me about it!!
