Documentary on Bed Bugs
(8 posts)-
I am co-producing a short documentary on Bed Bugs in the NY area for the festival market, and looking for gruesome tales of Bed Bug experiences. Here is a chance to share your tale.
The time committment would be 2 to 3 days spread out over 3 months.

Sally,
I PM'd you too...

Can we get more details about the doc? Are these interviews, are you looking to film in a residence, are their legal disclaimers, how will the film be distributed, etc?

Good questions, bekelah.

We are still developing the project.
At this stage the idea is tell 3 or 4 personal stories of a nightmarish bed bug experience, with the city of New York as the 5th "character". Documentaries often unfold as you shoot/ edit. At this stage each character would be filmed in their home (presuming this was the place of the bed bug experience) talking about their brush with b bugs. I would also like to include a little about each persons daily life. The style will be leaning toward the impressionistic. For example you might be talking about the bugs, but instead of seeing your face we might see disembodied hands bagging up laundry or something along those lines.
This short doc would be for online and traditional festivals, all participants would sign a release saying they were willing to be part of the piece.
I would love to hear your bed bug story!

SallyO, be sure to mention prominently that the bedbug problem does not occur only in New York City. (There is a tendency to sneer at NYC, even by New Yorkers.) Say that serious bedbug problems also exist in other places in the US and Europe.
Also mention that dead bedbugs have been found by archeologists in ancient Egypt and other places that existed long before America was discovered.
I recently saw a contemptuous remark online, from a European, that bedbugs had been recently brought over from America. That's entirely wrong, of course.
As for the documentary, the best still photo I have seen of a bedbug is Figure 2 in http://www.afpmb.org/pubs/tims/TG44/TG44.htm
That site, which I learned about from bedbugger.com, also gives a lot of useful information about bedbugs.
You might start the documentary with a fade-in of Figure 2, with swelling dramatic music. Then fadeout, and fadein the title of the documentary. But be sure to check the copyright of Figure 2, and get permission if necessary. The photographer should be given credit for his excellent, if gruesome, photo.
