over the past 7 weeks i have woken up every 2-3 weeks with 3-6 bites on my stomach. i am the only one in my house with any bites- my husband sleeps with me and our 4 year old often ends up in bed with us. do they bite this infrequently ?i have checked with flashlight for any evidence of bugs can't find anything. my mattress, box spring, and pillows are all in allergy encasements since we suffer from dust mite allergies.

if you had an unchecked infestation for 7 weeks you'd certainly be seeing evidence of it by now

As evidence, bites are never as good as other signs, like eggs, discarded skins, and fecal stains (tar-colored spots), so I'd focus on looking thoroughly for those before you get too terribly worried. Note that different people react differently to bug bites - some people (estimates run up to 50%) aren't allergic to the bugs and don't react at all to the bites, and for those who *are* allergic, it can take days or weeks for the bites to appear. (I had an infestation since June, apparently, and only noticed bites in early August.) You might want to consider some passive bug monitors too: try buying some double-sided fly tape (I found a bunch at Home Depot) and placing it on your bedposts or around your bed to see if any bugs get caught on it. You can also place cups of oil/soapy water/etc. under each bedpost. I'm sure other people have other and better ideas about passive bedbug monitors.

If bites are your only evidence, look for any bite patterns... bedbugs tend to bite a few times in the same place before drawing blood, so bites usually appear in threes (the so-called "breakfast-lunch-dinner" pattern).

I wish I'd read this a few weeks ago... I had bites but no evidence for 2 months + and we just spent $1300 on various treatments that may have been unecessary :(
