When they are not feeding, how likely are they to "hitchhike" on bare skin? Would one just be hanging out on my body (except my clothes) for longer than it takes to feed?
    Thank you.

I have heard that they go back into hiding soon after feeding. They may be hiding in clothing, but I don't think they latch on like a tick or louse.

Nope. They absolutely don't latch on like a tick or a louse, and they're not comfortable hanging out on you after feeding. They will spend the few minutes it takes to get a meal, and then crawl away.

Now, if your clothing has lots of folds/seams/etc., they might still be in your clothing... from my experience they seem to sometimes be too DUMB to find their way out again once they've crawled in. I once was wearing a pair of sweatpants and started to feel itchy. A few minutes later a couple of bites were starting to come up, so I took off the sweatpants and turned them inside out in good light, and found the bug crawling on the inside.

I'm pretty sure this is how the "hitchhiking" happens -- they go after a meal, end up in your clothing, and in the meantime you've moved to a different room, so when they crawl off you again they've gotten a free ride to somewhere new. Overall they're not really comfortable being on or around you while you're awake and moving around; they would rather hide somewhere safe. They'll brave it if they're starving but that's it.

*Can* they go into hiding soon after feeding? If they get so fat after feeding, how would they fit into their narrow-crevice-homes?

    Just curious.

Actually, this reminds me of myself. I also like to retreat to my resting place immediately after gorging, but am sometimes too fat and full to do so. :)

    Thank you for the information.

So, what we really need is better signage inside our clothing. This way to the egress.

Good idea, cilecto! While we're making up signs, I'm going to do one that reads "All U Can Eat Buffet ----->", with the arrow pointing at my BF, who doesn't react to bites. ;)

if they are hanging out inside my clothes and a slap them will it kill them or will they just sink into my skin and be protected by their shell. i swear i feel them in there and always smack at them but never found any evidence
