    Do bed bugs have hearing?

    Uh, er, not so much.

Some insects may have structures known as tympanic membranes but this does not mean that they can hear in a similar fashion as humans do. And, some insects have these structures located in what we might consider weird locations, such as on a leg, and other insects may not have such structures at all.

The following is from Scientific American:
The insect's hearing organ, although tucked in the crook of its front legs, has components that echo the structures of our own middle and inner ear, researchers have discovered.

Of interest is the following abstract from The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology which may peak some folks gross-o-meter:
There is a resurgence of interest in the biology and clinical disease associated with Cimex lectularius, as the common bed bug is becoming more prevalent in well-developed countries. A patient presented with complaints of right ear irritation for several days' duration. A foreign body was lavaged from the ear canal, which proved to be an engorged nymphal form of Cimex lectularius.

Bed bugs may be able to sense vibrations but sound as humans perceive it is another matter.

    Hope this helps ! pjb

    Paul,

Have you ever thought to just ask one? If they do not respond then you'll know the answer.

I knew the answer to this one, but it's an interesting question for those who don't. Thanks for the excellent answer, Paul. And thanks for the laugh, NY Bugman!
