Discarded mattress to car transfer?
(3 posts)-
What are the chances that bed bugs would leave a mattress/box spring discarded on a sidewalk, and find a way to enter a closed vehicle? I am already very leary about my work environment, and the possibility of picking up bed bugs, and transfering them home (I work for a public social service agency in Cincinnati that has had to be treated for bed bugs in the past), and now I guess I have to worry about where I park my car when I go into work. This morning I parked on a street that has many old houses that have been converted into apartments. When I arrived back at my car after work, I happened to notice about 2 car lengths behind my car on the sidewalk was a discarded mattress and box spring set. Although I have no way of knowing if it was infested with bed bugs or not, due to Cincinnati's bed bug epidemic, the fact that it appeared to be a newer mattress set, and it appeared to have grayish stains around the edges, I am pretty certain that there is a very strong possibility that it was. My question is "would bed bugs typically leave a mattress/box spring in the middle of a nice sunny day, and attempt to wander into the nearest enclosed structure (the cars bordering the sidewalk)"?

I don't think anyone can say for certain. Bed bugs have been known to walk from one building to another. However, my hunch would be they need to be attracted to something. They move towards humans when they're hungry because they sense our CO2 and heat.
I am not saying it's impossible, but it gives me some comfort to think there's no one hanging out in the car attracting them.

Nobugs- don't cars give off heat and CO2?
I've often wondered the same thing
