Diatomaceous earth before Caulking
(6 posts)-
Hi
I'm moving to a new apt soon. I am planning to clean and caulk before I move in to prevent any future bb issues (although there arent any current bed bug issues as far as I know). Nevertheless I hope to install a BB beacon in there to pick up anything just in case.My question is how do I properly apply diatomaceous earth to cracks and crevices before caulking? Is there a FAQ on this somewhere? I dont want to poison myself. Also, where can I buy DE in the NYC area?
I found the awesome caulking FAQ Mangycur made sometime ago. Its awesome. I'm not very good at caulking but I will use the advice!
Thanks so much!

Use of an active monitor before moving in is a good idea.
Here is a link for the FAQ on DE http://bedbugger.com/2007/03/30/faqde/
Run a search on the forum threads for detailed discussions about the proper application of DE.
In general, it is very important to protect your eyes and your lungs from DE... especially when it is being applied.
DE is a mechanical killer ... think microscopic shards of glass. Sealing with caulk should encapsulate the DE.
Long term inhalation exposure is associated with a lung disease called Silicosis... It is very important that the label is followed. It should not be visible or applied in a location where is can be disturbed and made airborne . It is important to wear a proper respirator and air tight eye protection when any dust is applied.
Many people apply it wrong and use large amounts... if you use the proper rate it should only be an extremely light amount. Bed bugs are known to go around large piles... the floor around your bed should not resemble a sandy beach.
Ideally, you would have an qualified person demonstrate the proper application methods and locations. Otherwise you could run a search for industry materials that are used to train new techs.

Hey thanks Doug!
I don't know how I missed the FAQ but there is so much good information on these boards that somehow I missed that one. I will definitely check that out to do a proper job. I would like to get someone to do it for me but the only person I called hasnt called back so I think I am on my own.
The monitor is a good idea. I have some passive ones I am putting down and I plan to order a beacon soon and have it there before I move in. Because I was lucky enough to talk to the previous owner and another neighbor at the building who said there werent bbs, I think / hope I am ok. Granted all kinds of things can go wrong between getting the apt and moving in, but I am trying to prevent these issues.
Thanks again for your expertise!

Proper application with an insecticide DE like Mother Earth will serve as well as any other material and when used properly posses little risk. But take the time and do it properly.

ooh, thanks! that sounds like a good brand name, winston. it doesnt "sound" as harmful either, hence"mother." Ill be sure to check that out.
One question: Which way should this be done?
a)Caulking before DE or b) DE before Caulking? -
After reading more about DE, it's not a little risk, the %1 of the bad stuff in DE is a CLASS 1 CARCINOGEN. CANCER ANYONE?
