I live in NYC and read an article that indicated it is helpful to pre-treat, so to speak, your apartment, with Diatomaceous Earth, as a preventative measure against bedbugs, particularly so that bugs wouldn't be able to come into your apartment from other units as easily. Is this recommended?

Food grade only-available at most healthfood stores. Still need a dustmask when using it just to be safe. Food grade doesn't contain poisons, so it shouldn't hurt you. A lot of people eat it or put it in pet food to rid themselves and pets of parasites.

Actually, there are some hazards to be aware of even with food grade DE. Please read the FAQ on DE for an introduction -- it leads to further resources also. Note experts here recommend a full respirator mask for application -- not a dust mask.

The Comprehensive Guides in the Resources page may be helpful with techniques.
