ok-i'm totally freaking out. we were exposed the bedbugs a week ago on a trip to Montreal.
turns out the bed we were sleeping on was infested with the bugs, but we didn't get any bites. we got home and washed everything before we got in the house and have been SUPER cautious-didn't bring any luggage or anything in. BUT, my husband woke up this morning and a few hours later he noticed some bites on him!! about 20 developed, and now they are dissapperaing. is there any way this is a delayed reaction from the bugs in Montreal?? we don't see ANY on our bed!!
please, any insight would be helpful
    thanks!!

I think it's likely a delayed reaction. Delayed reactions are definitely possible and the bites appearing all at once makes sense.

Keep monitoring the situation at home, as if you need reminding, I know! If it were me I would keep cleaning very carefully and thoroughly. It's good that your husband is allergic; you'll know that you are in the clear if there are no more bites and no signs for a continued period of oh, say three weeks.

    Good luck.

That's good, hang in there. Read the FAQs here for future reference. Lots of very good advice about how to inspect and what to do to avoid this situation when you travel again.

    hi Scared,

If you don't have kids or pets, you may want to do some research about possible other mechanical methods such as steaming (for your fabric chairs, couches, etc. and maybe dusting DE in the cracks and crevices and getting vinyl mattress covers after you steam your mattresses.

Personally, I think the effort is worth the time upfront even though you're not sure yet if you got them.

Could you please let me know which hotel in Montreal you stayed at? Not that I plan on travelling much in the next year, but if I know any friends going I would like to warn them. It would be helpful to others if you posted your experience on TripAdvisor.com about the hotel and also in this and other BB sites that document where infestations have been recorded in the area.

    Thanks and best wishes.

thanks for the advice. now we both have bites. i'm at my parent's house and slept here last night and awoke with more bites-this
convinces me that almost for sure the bites are from our Montreal trip. there are def. no bed bugs at my parent's house and i didn't bring ANYTHING that i had in Montreal with me. the place we stayed at is called Au Piano Blanc. it's a cute little B&B, and it seemed like they had no idea about the bugs. but i still can't help but be mad at them for making us go thru this! i sent the owner an email with links to different bed bug info. sites-basically advising her that she needs to take the problem seriously. i think she will be...i hope.

You should post a warning review at tripadvisor.com. Many people check those reviews in order to avoid bed bugs. If others have previously complained, you may realize the B&B was already aware...

    hi Scared,

I don't want to scare you even more, but I would really think twice about staying anywhere other than your own house for the next little while. The last thing you want to do is spread the problem to the rest of your family...and then have them spread it back to you after you've dealt with any potential infestations.

I would even not sleep anywhere other than your bed either because that's what we did the first night we found out we had them. We slept downstairs on the couch and then that room got infested as well.

    hello,
yeah, i thought about that. but i already had the trip planned and it was nice to rest
at my parent's house. i was super careful and hardly brought anything with me. as soon
as i arrived i washed my clothes and my duffel bag, and i brought my toiletries in a zip lock. i figure i may not have them at home-so far we haven't found ANYTHING. let's hope it
    stays that way...
    but thanks for the advice!

    hi again,
another delayed reaction opinion: i found a few more bites today, on my wrist and it's been 10 days since we left Montreal. could this be bites from the trip? we haven't found ANYTHING in or aorund the bed and have checked with a flashlight every night around 3 or 4 am-nothing.
but i'm still freaking out, and cleaning like crazy.
    thanks for listening...

    Hi Scared,

I think prudence demands that you consult a PCO at this point. You've already had a first batch of delayed reaction bites. Additional bites at this stage have to be considered new just in the interest of being smart, since there is no way to be reassured otherwise. Yes, I suppose they could still be part of your general reaction to the original bites, in the best case scenario, but if I were you I'd want to hear that from a dermatologist.

Remember that the best case scenario could be the denial scenario depending on your situation and temperament. Get competent advice.

Time to call in a pro--and visit the doctor. Good luck.

I agree. I think new bites after 10 days suggests something has come home with you.

Many people go months without ever seeing evidence. If you got them in Montreal (ie you did not unknowingly already have them), you might not be seeing much visual evidence for a while.

If you saw bugs in Montreal, some PCOs would take that and the "bites" since you've been home as enough evidence to treat. This is expensive, but prudent, and cheaper to treat than a BIGGER infestation down the line.

Apparently no one posted a bed bug review on TripAdvisor with the B&B mentioned in this thread - Au Piano Blanc - and people have been talking about planning to go there on Canadian Thanks giving weekend. So sad!

Another place in Montreal to absolutely avoid: Auberge Chez Jean (Chez Jean Hostel). I have posted on tripadvisor.com, as have others, going back more than a year -- if only I had read reviews before staying there...
