Got Bed Bugs? Bedbugger Forums » Uncategorized
Dealing with difficult Landlords.
(3 posts)-
I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for dealing with difficult Landlords. I have been dealing with this problem since January however I didn't start getting treatment until I finally spotted one and caught it and showed it to my landlord. I also picked the time that he was showing the place to a possible buyer (I should mention they are selling the place). I was quickly ushered into the hall and told it would be dealt with immediately. That was the middle of June. Three treatments later I am still finding the odd bed bug however over the past couple weeks I have been noticing more and more bites.
When I contacted my landlord the response I get well you shouldn't be getting them, a visitor must be bringing them in. Well I haven't had anyone in here since June as I have been scared to invite someone over and have them get them (my apartment is a small bachelor). I have just felt from the start they have blamed me. They have never treated the rest of the building or even investigated.
Now I am frustrated, and I can't afford to move out I just feel trapped and don't know what to do.

Ah, yes, the "You must have had a visitor bring them in" line - I'm very familiar with that one! Where do you live? Many cities mandate that it is the landlord's duty to provide a safe, habitable place for tenants to live, and bedbugs certainly violate that safe, habitable place. Therefore, a lot of the time, the landlord is responsible for paying for treatment and, if they do not, you can press legal charges. When I first told my landlord about my infestation, she had her father come over with a 10 dollar bottle of spray and he sprayed my room and swept around with a broom, thinking that would be that. I protested, they didn't listen, until I called them every morning for the next week telling them I kept finding more and more bugs and that their quickie fix obviously wasn't working. I finally said "I don't want to make a legal issue out of this, but..." and that got them to finally cover an exterminator. Also important is to warn the landlord that if they don't treat your problem as soon and as professionally as possible, the bugs will spread EASILY throughout the bulding, and then they'll have an ENORMOUS problem on their hands.

I live in Ontario. Don't get me wrong I have had 3 treatments done that were paid for by my landlords... they just don't want to pay for anymore!
However after writing this earlier, I found out that my neighbour has them now and caught about 20 last night. It makes me even more mad because my land lord still blamed me for having visitors when he knew of other cases. All along I have thought they came from that apartment. The day before I moved in the guy there moved out and threw out all of his belongings and then the place sat empty for a month!!!
