Dead BB vs. Shell

Maybe this is a dumb question, but is it easy to tell the difference between a dead bb and a shell? I found one next to my chair and I'm not sure which it is. I would think it's a dead bb except for the fact that it's *very, very* thin, which makes me think maybe it's a shell.
