DE question
(4 posts)-
hi,
Because I am having great difficulty finding a decent PCO here in Los Angeles, I bought some DE from a nursery. It's called Concern - DE - Crawling Insect Killer. It says on the package it's safe to use indoors but is this truly safe for me to sleep with in same room? I dusted around my air mattress but I'm not sure if it's food safe. It doesn't say on the package. Anybody know? I do have an Orkin pest guy coming tomorrow and I'll ask him but I have to sleep on the air mattress tonight...Thanks for any input! -
There's a DE faq you should read before using DE: http://bedbugger.com/2007/03/30/faqde/
I would hold off on using DE until you can speak to a PCO who can inspect your home. Using it tonight is not going to do much by itself as DE doesn't kill instantly. It takes days. You can also call the manufacturer or google the product to find the Material Safety Data Sheet.
You'd be better off tonight figuring out how to isolate your air mattress on the floor to have a good chance of getting some sleep. People have tried placing a plastic tarp underneath that is then taped down around the perimeter and then have placed a barrier like double-sided carpet tape (although I'm not sure that everyone has good experiences with double-sided carpet tape) all around. Not sure if you have carpeting. If you have bare floors, you should obviously thoroughly clean the surface with hot water and soap first.
I hope you have a good inspection tomorrow. Hang in there.

Thanks hopelessno,
I have carpet and did exactly what you suggested. I think these creatures may not get stuck on the tape but it's worth a shot. The most UNNERVING thing just happened though. As I was taping the plastic tarp down, I saw one on my wall about 10 inches from the ceiling. Sprayed it with alcohol but I'm terrified to sleep in there. I just wonder where else they're hiding. :( ugh. this is taking such a mental toll. I saved it for the Orkin man. -
I read the other posts where others recommended similar strategies. The vaseline on top of the double sided carpet tape and the double sided carpet tape on top of removable blue painter's tape sound like good ideas. Once the treatments start, and you establish your routines, you'll feel more in control. Also be careful with the alcohol spray.
