Couple of things freaking me out. Bed bug ID
(7 posts)-
Been curious whether I have bed bugs. I have itched on occasion but only have had pimple-like things and never cared to scrutinize them for patterns, etc. Lately I've been more diligent with searching for signs. Never seen actual bug. Have had small black specks on bed before. Only lately been using peroxide and they never smeared. Well today saw what appears to be blood stain on my pillow! ALSO right next to it is a faint black line - fecal smear?
I haven't torn apart my bed yet. I've just checked sheets, mattress, and the box spring parts I can see. There is two questionable rust-colored stains on the right side of the box spring.
Lastly, I have a popcorn ceiling in the bedroom and closet. There are black dots in places. They were there when I moved in and are especially bad in the closet. I wondered what it was when I moved in and thought it might be mold (I do have a humidity problem and have a minor silverfish issue. Damp rid in closet captures a lot of moisture). Was going to inquire about possible mold to apts and never did. Been here six months now.

Links to pictures below. What do you think? I am freaking out. Going to call to see if I can get a dog inspection tomorrow. Do the pest guys bring mattress covers in case you test positive?

Hi,
Just been through all the pictures and can't see anything that confirms bedbugs.
I suspect the dots on the ceiling are likely to be dust or mold.
Hope that helps.

Thanks David. I know you know your stuff so hearing that from you makes me feel a little better. The pic of the blood stain didn't come out as well as I would have liked but if you click on those pictures, they enlarge and you can see them a little better. So do you (or anyone else) think that it's not blood or that the blood is too large to be from a bed bug and must be from something else?
I will say that I got a swiffer, taped a q tip with peroxide to the tip of the handle, and tried to wrestle one of the big spots down, but it wouldn't smear or budge and thankfully it didn't move!
Should I forgo the dog inspection and first try passive monitor?
Thanks again. So thankful for the site and everyone's input on here.

Hi.
Looked again specifically at the blood spots. None are faecal and thus could equally be caused by many other things.
As a good canine team will always do visual confirmation it may help to put you at ease if it's an affordable option for you. If they don't visually confirm or are not affordable then passives would be a feasible option.

for what it's worth I've seen some of the streaks that you posted. It turned out they were caused by my dryer.

Thanks David and scaredpea. Although, I know that those spots aren't from my dryer b/c they definitely weren't there before.
But I do have an update and wanted to share. I paid for a K9 inspection and passed. Another update is that one day before the K9 inspection I was going through some stuff that was under my bed that I brought out to the living room. I really didn't want to bring them beyond my bedroom but bedroom's too small. Anyway, I found some amber spot on the floor in the living room afterwards and thought it was nothing but put it in hydrogen peroxide anyway and it fizzed! I freaked a little but since then I've had the K9 inspection and the guy hid the vial a couple of times and the dog found it, so the dog seems credible.
Had I not found the random red spot that fizzed, I'd consider this 100% victory, so for now, I consider this 90%. Like David says, you can find something that fizzed, but there's no way to know where it came from/whether it's a bedbug indicator.
At this point, just gonna be aware of spots on bed/bites, but not gonna literally lose sleep over anything. Hope this gives some hope that you can find things and maybe not have bedbugs. Thanks to all for your answers/support!
