Could I have bed bugs?(5 posts)
I'm not sure if anyone can help, but I've been incredibly anxious and thought I would try.
I have three marks on my hand that look like bites. I have been complaining about them to my husband for well over a week now.
Then I got a few other marks on my other arm - looked very different - but tiny welts - not in a row or anything. After a good search of my body I discovered 4 bumps in a row on the side of my foot and another 3 on the bottom - they look like they've been there awhile.
SO we tore apart our bedroom - REALLLY tore it apart (it's small) - went over the mattress with a fine pick comb, and the box spring - sides, bottom, top etc. Nothing - no dark spots, no blood, no casings, no bugs.
We did find a few carpet beetles - including one on my exact side of the bed (a live one) and several casings - clearly carpet beetles and not bed bugs.
We even went so far as to remove all clothes from drawers and wash and dry them (they are in garbage bags in the basement for now) and to look in all drawers etc. and in outlets, behind frames etc. etc.
I have not been bitten in at least 3 nights, but likely much longer as the bites on my feet were discovered Thursday but appear old.
Tim has never been bitten - and we both have been bitten before while travelling and reacted a lot.
We stayed at a hotel on the 21st of December and slept in different beds.
I'm terrified...incredibly anxious - moreso at night than in the morning. We have steamed the entire room, put encasements on both the mattress and boxspring, but down diatomaceous earth along the base boards and around the bed legs and have ordered bed moats to try and detect further.
Originally we had a consult booked but we are sure they wouldn't find anything else (no dogs or anything) so we have cancelled for now to see what the bed moats tell us (they will be here mid week).
Is there anything else I can do? How long before I can breathe easy?
As many here on this site will tell you, bites are not definitive of bed bugs.
Some will also tell you that carpet beetles can cause bite-like reactions.
I have used K9s twice. Once, when I returned from holiday and felt I had been exposed in a hotel. I too encased my bed, bought Climb Ups and sticky little boxes, washed and dried everything in my suitcase. After some weeks I brought in the dog. I was all clear. It was wonderful to have the peace of mind.
My daughter is moving into a rental condo that was previously occupied. We were concerned that there might be a problem. Another pass. More peace of mind.
If you can find a good K9 inspection team, I highly recommend. Good Luck!
Thank you so much for your reply...no new bites on either my husband or myself this morning. I will feel better once the bed moats get here. In the morning I think I was likely bitten at GWL and just have a lasting/later response...as night gets closer I become convinced of an infestation here :(.
I itch all over...but I know it's in my head.
Dogs aren't really a choice here - I think there is only one single team in Ontario and it's over a thousand dollars to bring them in because of it - more than the treatment with most pest companies.
Where are you in Ontario?
I'm in Manitoba. The cost of bringing in a dog from Edmonton ( no dog here) is $2000.00.
I found a Canadian K9 trainer and bed bug inspector who lives in the US who does a cross border run 3 times a month and does inspections for schools, libraries, nursing homes, etc in Manitoba. Perhaps if you're close enough to the Manitoba border, it could work.
$2000!!! I have looked into it here - limited options - but I'm in Kitchener, and they do have a dog in Vaughan. It would be $495 plus HST. Sounds like a bit of a bargain compared to you! I'm not jumping in quite yet as I think a lot of this is my anxiety, rather than concrete proof.
I also called GWL and they are sending a team in to inspect the room and sending me the official report. If they find evidence of bugs, they will help with the cost of detection and treatment. No other complaints about that room though - but they did have a complaint over the holidays, but in a different room.
