I understand that diagnosing a problem over the internet isn't optimal, but if any of you can offer help/suggestions/ideas you'd be making my day.

I woke up a week ago with several small red bites. My first thought was bedbugs, since I live in Brooklyn and New York City seems to have a bit of an epidemic. I contacted my landlord and he said there had been no other complaints in my eight-unit building. He sent over an exterminator the next day who did not find any bugs, casing, feces, or other signs, but he sprayed and put DE in the outlets after looking at my bites and agreeing that they appeared to be bedbug bites.

I got a few more bites over the weekend (maybe 10 total), reported this to my landlord, and he sent the exterminator back this morning. Again, no bugs or signs of bugs anywhere- he sprayed the bed and mattress (no boxspring), dresser, and chair and couch (the only upholstery in the apartment). I bagged and washed and dried (or dried on high for one hour) all clothes at the laundromat while he was working.

What do you guys think? I know lack of bug evidence points to no bed bugs, but the way the bites show up overnight and my location make me think "Of course it's bed bugs, and trying to come up with an alternative is just wishful thinking." Is it possibel I have them and they're hiding in the wood floor? The exterminator said if they were there they would have come out when he sprayed. It's beyond frustrating not to be able to figure out what the problem is in order to tackle it. Oh, and my bed doesn't have legs, so Climb ups aren't going to work. Help!

    Hi elleinnyc,

I'm facing a similar situation as you. I'm starting to think that whatever's biting me is something else that's much smaller. One member told me it could be mites, ticks, fleas, or carpet beetles. But from there I have no idea how to approach the next step into narrowing down the possibilities. I'm also waiting for some help.
Best of luck in finding the culprit!
We should keep each other updated if we find something new. =)

will do. the lack of feces/other signs of them, which seems like they should be left behind even if the bugs are good at hiding really makes me wonder. i just don't want to get my hopes up and then find out i'm infested after all! good luck to you, too.
