I'm not sure what it is, but I am sure it's NOT a bed bug.

Of course people can have allergic reactions to just about anything. But these bugs are actually common and I used to play with these and the one's that used to roll into a ball as a kid.

They're not bugs or insects, they're terrestrial crustaceans... they need environments with high umidity or, at least, a humid harbourage to survive. They're scavengers and absolutely not noxious...

Well... in my "insect room" I'm actually breeding three different kind of isopods: sow bugs, pill bugs and white jungle dwarf isopods.
Plus about 60 different species of cockroaches, millipedes, giant snails, etc.

Lol... in my insect room I'm actually breedinf three different isopod species: sow bugs, pill bugs and white dwarf jungle isopods (very tiny...1/4" as adults).
Plus about 60 cockroach species, millipedes, giant snails, etc...

Being an entomologist, "nasty looking" doesn't make sense to me....

Lol Adele! Yes I had my collection of Barbies too! But we had two boys living next door. In many ways I was one of the boys too! Brings back some funny memories these bugs. I had a little fuzzy brown and back catapillar in a plastic cup for a day once....Oh, and we used to take the yucky black catapillars and put them on the coals of the habachi to watch them explode too! (uh, Gross!!) I look back now and I DREAD what my son will be bringing/doing in a year or two from now!!!

Boy - you guys sure know a fun time!!!

Effeci - as far as I'm concerned anything that has more than 2 legs and does not belong to the animal kingdom is nasty looking to me - so it's an all encompasing statement

I recall our garden when I was growing up, we had a low brick border and each summer we had billions of ants. My mother was an avid gardener and used to pour 'Jeyes Fluid' into the ants holes to kill them and my sisters and me would poke into the nest with sticks, twigs you name it to flush the ants out and watch them dying in droves!

I can't believe I did that, I respect and love most insects (not wasps, hornets or bbs!) and I truly cringe when I think of the poor ants suffering for our amusement:(

You know that one is true. I would love to share details of what I do to let my hair down but its just not appropriate and a whole different forum. I am just glad I don't often mix the two up.

I have to say its a diverse group that want to hang out and help on bed bug issues and almost as diverse as those who get exposed to the problem and find their way here.

I do however wonder if the die hards theme tune should be Hotel California, the line about checking out any time but you can never leave seems appropriate.

As always David - a good point and very thoughtful observation

As diverse as the group is here - we are all bound by the same theme of being afflicted with the horrors of these creatures - something that in my experience - NO ONE - and I mean NO ONE - understands unless they too have experienced it

I think the "die-hards" here - of which I probably am a reluctant member - are a special breed that wants to give somethng back and try to help others out. Certainly some "die-hards" are more helpful than others - but we all try in some way

I believe most of us could check out and move on - but I will speak for myself as I am still scarred by this experience and not ready to do so
