O.K. I know they exist, I've heard mostly good stuff about them, but agree with David Cain from UK that the Dogs can’t actually climb walls or use a flashlight to check the ceiling corners etc....

I'm wondering if--since I've been recently reading so much from all of you, and most of you who have had the bed bug dog sniffer's come by, never seem to find any evidence yourselves--Do the dogs ever possibly make mistakes? Can it be they are sniffing only bed bug feces? Might they possibly only be identifying areas where a bed bug HAD been yesterday?

So since there is so much talk about the dogs, let's have some more!
How much does it cost? How certain are you in the dogs ability to sniff out an actual Bed bug rather than a "half false alarm" as in, the bugs were in a particular spot at a recent previous time however the dog identified the area as positive.

From what I’ve read a lot of you have done cleaning before the dogs came to sniff.
Do you think it is possible that a bed bug sucked up in a vacuum cleaner yesterday, will falsely be identified as still being there by the dog? I mean, don’t dogs sniff out trails … and if a trail stops … say in the middle of a bed—would that not confuse a dog causing a possible false Bed bug ID?

and i wonder if a dog can be trained to falsely say you do have them, then you hire that same dog owner as the pco? it would get business for itself?!

i hope noone is that cruel.

Although I want to believe that bed bug dogs will provide much needed service...I think there are limitations...I think for single hotel rooms, they might be more effective. Hotels are in desperate mode now, they are facing tremendous lawsuits. Prior to the eradication of bed bugs in the 1950's Hotel and motels were known places where one could pick up the bugs, so now that are "progress" has gone back in time, they find themselves , once again in a very precarious postition. Bed Bug dogs in commercial settings, ie hotels, cruise ships , buses, airplanes...might have a higher success rate. Why? omo..because in our homes we have more "stuff"....more concentrated living. I would like to know how exactly a dog does sniff out a bed bug if it is hiding in a ceiling blinds area...or a ceiling smoke detector..or fire alarm...or sprinkler head...all of these are high up in hotels rooms....I promote ANYTHING that will help combat bed bugs...but we need to know "all angles"....

I did get a long and through reply in PM to this topic this morning from a trained dog owner. For whatever reason he/she did not post it in here so I WILL not reveal the source: althogh she/he did not make it, like a "SHHH ... don't tell anybody message."

I was told the dogs cost aobut 10K (I hope this meant to purchase a dog.); that the dogs are becoming more common place so the prices were coming down ... (again I don't know if that is to purchase or to hire or buy one--hopefully both), and, more importantly; I was told that the dog is used as a tool and that the trianer should or would be expected to do the other inspections like check the ceilings and use a flashlight. (Probalby check high drapes and high blinds too I'd imagine)

We have had several people here use the dog bed bug sniffers.

I wish they would fill us in on the cost and procedure and if, the trainer also did inspections as well or not.

So there is no hidden problems here to post this info. In a 2nd PM Doug Summers MS wrote to me:

Willow I don't have any problem with having the message I sent to you posted or being identified on the forum. I sent it directly to you because it is similar to info I have posted in the past. I am happy to provide info about K9 inspection. The question about false positives is the only part that I am concerned about due to a warning from the trainer that anything I post online could come up in a legal dispute. I am expressing my opinion, but there are others that have a different position of that subject. The important points for consumers are that dogs are not 100% in every situation & that the skill of the handler is a key issue. Some handlers are experienced PCOs and others are trained only as dog handlers. I misunderstood the question about cost. I charge $125. an hour in my local area or $750. a day (plus expenses)if I have to travel. There is no standard price & each market is different. Feel free to post my PM if you like.
