Bug ID Please!

    Found this tiny red bug crawling on top of my mattress. That's my thumb in the pic for scale. Unfortunately, it's pretty squished, but hopefully still identifiable! Thanks in advance.

    No, not an insect, but a mite. Not a rodent or bird mite, but a velvet mite. These belong to different families. The larval mite is typically parasitic on other arthropods (spiders, daddy long legs, insects, but some feed on pollen) and the nymph and adult predaceous on other, smaller arthropods or their eggs.
