Boxspring encasements
(6 posts)-
So apparently, here in Canada, Protect-A-Bed boxspring encasements aren't available. Can I use one of their (cough) much-more-expensive mattress encasements on our boxsprings, or is the boxspring, with its sharper edges, likely to damage it more easily?

Louise,
I think that you will have fit issues. Is it possible to order them from a US company (Northshore, Amazon.com, etc.)?

I don't think fit is an issue, since our boxspring is the same depth as our mattress.
Unless there's something about the way the Allerzips fit that I am not aware of...
Yes, I could order them from the U.S., but if there's an issue that requires one to be returned, it's so much easier to just drive five minutes and have it dealt with immediately that way, rather than having the extra expense of mailing the offending encasement away, and then awaiting its return...

Some companies recommend using the mattress encasement for the box spring . The down side is the cost but the mattress encasement is allot nicer

I guess I may be an oddball. I have ordered hundreds of things off of the internet over the last few years. I am soooo over the "what if I have to send it back" concern. You can get your items for 20-40% less on the internet. In most cases you do not have to pay for return shipping if there is in fact a manufacturing problem (I check this out prior to ordering). The other good thing is that I can sit on my fat ass and drink beer while I shop (You cannot even do that at Farm & Fleet). It takes about week to get most items, but I am happy to have the money I saved (More money for beer).
To speak to your concern directly, there is low probability for having a problem with these items. They are only slightly more complicated than a mattress pad/ fitted sheet. How many times have you had issues with these things? You can have zipper issues, but how often have you had issues with zippers on new items (esp. one that you will likely only use once every 18 months)? Just be careful as you zip it up and all will be fine.
If I recall correctly, the box spring encasement was 40% less than the one for the mattress. Unless you get lots of reports of defective encasement from others on this forum, I would not waste the money.

Louise,
I'm starting to lose my fan-of-encasements status. We have four beds in our house and since we found our BBs about 6 weeks ago, we purchased our own encasements and then replaced them with encasements provided by our PCO. We found holes due to manufacturer defect on both brands and also found holes caused by scraping our bedframes. I don't know if it's a big problem or some serious bad luck, but these very expensive encasements offer no protection if there are holes.
Instead of encsements, you might want to try treating your mattress with steam and save some money. Good luck with your situation!
