BedBugs at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn - Saw one myself
(4 posts)-
Unfortunately, my father suffered a head injury last Thursday and my family and I spent most of the weekend in the intensive care unit at Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. There's a waiting room near the ICU with couches and a recliner and we were given sheets and told we could try to get some sleep through the night there. We woke up every hour to check on my dad. At 4 a.m. my brother and I were talking and what do i see strolling across the floor -- unmistakably a bed bug. I showed my brother b/c he'd never seen one before, then we contacted maintenance and told them. The maintenance guy looked and didn't see the bug and said he'd check the furniture. He said they were going to call an exterminator, but we've been there every day and the room has been open as usual each day. We have not gone back in. Fortunately, my packtite had just arrived that day and as soon as we got home, my brother and I put everything we had with us right in the packtite. We were especially worried b/c we had our bags and shoes sitting on the floor while we napped. I have no idea if I got any bites b/c I don't react. But let me tell you this was almost more than I could bear given my dad's condition, our lack of sleep, and the trauma of just having gone through a costly infestation. We told the nurses too and they said they weren't surprised b/c lots of people sleep in that room and many people bring their own bedding with them. On the whole, I have to say Lutheran is a pretty filthy hospital. The bathrooms are smelly and dirty and they have people waiting for day op in their surgical gowns and hospital issued socks in these dirty waiting rooms and using dirty bathroms.
My dad is stable and we're transferring him to Mt Sinai ASAP. Hopefully, it will be cleaner and we wont' encounter any more bugs. I feel like they are following me everywhere I go -- it's insane.

I would try and call management at LMC, if you only spoke with a maintenance guy.
It could happen at ANY hospital (esp. where people bring bedding and things in), but you are lucky you are aware of the problem, saw one, and could take precautions.

Oh, and I hope your dad is better soon!

Hospitals have lots of people in and out, so I would expect BBs to be introduced.
