Here at the midpoint of life's journey, I'd paused on the way and found myself without much motivation or direction. One phase of life was over and nothing new had come along to replace it. I was financially secure, had a loving partner, a good career, but nothing seemed to satisfy. Where was the ambition, the drive, the focus, the dreams of youth?

I was in a terrible malaise, a deep rut. I had everything, but it was all meaningless.

In my darkest hour, I prayed to my higher power, which I idiosycratically refer to as "The Council of Inner Advisors". They met in solemn conclave on a higher plane of existence and decided on a solution: a plague, ripped straight from the bloodiest pages of the hebrew bible.

    Bedbugs.

More than 24 hours into this scourge and my life is completely focussed, stripped to bare essentials. A naked struggle for preeminence with the arthopodic foe.

I'm in the midst of a cleaning and decluttering such as I have never seen. Total reunciation of all material goods. My conapt will be stripped to the walls by the time this is done. I have no more time for negative thoughts, anxieties, midlife crisis or anything like that.

We've got to occupy our energies with something in this life. It might as well be bugs.

    (apologies to Chris Hedges)

When life gives you lemons make lemonade. Bugs can certainly occupy your time but I hope in the future it will be a bit less intense and not with a pest.
