How likely is it that a detached single family home in Suffolk County could have bedbugs 13 months apart?

Our first infestation occurred around April-May 2007 courtesy of my brother who had bedbugs before, during and after his overnight stay at our home. He did not tell us had them when he stayed over.

Since we had never had bedbugs before, we didn't figure out our problem quickly. My wife had numerous bites and our sheets had the telltale stains before I caught a live bedbug. We had a moderate infestation though it seemed limited to one room - our bedroom.

We had a exerminator come in and spray every nook and cranny of the house while we laundered and dry cleaned everything possible. We also vaccuumed as directed every day for quite a while. Result: no bedbugs - for 13 months.

My brother has not re-entered the house in all that time and we had not gone to his house. However, we had dinner with him at a restaurant in early June 2008. He did not even get into our car. He supposedly is bedbug free now.

Well, in late June 2008 my wife caught a live bedbug in our bedroom on our bed!

It is definitely a bedbug, the exterminators agree.

Also, the exterminators can find no evidence of infestation other than the one live bug my wife found. Nothing!

How did this happen? IS this a remnant of the first infestation; the gift that never stops giving? Did this bug survive all that while? IS it an offspring? Where are the rest?

Or did we win the bedbug lottery twice from a completely new source? We have not stayed at hotel since August 2007! However, three of us at the family have stayed overnight in June 2008 at St. Charles Hospital in Long Island for sleep problem studies (no big deal).

Did we pick something up at the hospital?

Or did we get it from some clothing given to us from a friend of a friend? Some of it was new and some was from the dry cleaner.

Other than the above, we've had just the normal visits from friends, etc. at the house and vice versa.

I'm undecided as to what to do; we have one live bug (now dead) and nothing else.

My thought is to do a limited attack on the bedbugs until we know how this happened because we could spend tons of money only to be re-infested again from the same unknown source.

    Does anyone have advice?
