bedbug products
(10 posts)-
As I'm shopping these days, wouldn't you know that there have been a lot of products popping up in stores to kill bedbugs. There are at least 4 different ones that I've seen pop up within the past 3 months. Some are squirting sprays and some are aerosol and one was a misty spray. And...in front of a store window which just happens to be an extermination business says in really big letters that like covers half the storefront window "We sell poisons that kill bedbugs." So, just outta curiosity, I went in and they sell Bedlam, Sterifab and Drione. So, I was asking questions like I didn't know anything and the person there said that Bedlam and Sterifab are for bbs, but not Drione. I thought that was very strange...!
So, I'm thinking, does this mean that a lotta people have bbs and are trying to deal w/it on their own. I had the unfortunate experience of knowing people who have roaches and just live with them. I'm thinking that these people will just live with bbs in the same manner. Because, why would they think different if they do not try to educate themselves about bbs? They will probably think that it's another "roach" problem to be dealt with.
Just my thoughts, this is not true facts or evidence but my opinion only.

love it the opinions--keep it in ... the play we're all writing here!
So ... what did they say drione was for--sea horses????? -
Hi Jammin,
I think the appearance of bedbug products over the counter is inevitable. At least those are real products labelled for bedbugs. I used to see street signs in my old neighborhood hawking what can only be called a bedbug potion with an 800 number and a depressing "Got bedbugs?" line.
Poeple's first impulse when they realize they have bedbugs will be to self-treat, unfortunately. After all, they self-treat for most other pests, like cockroaches, and only call a professional when things are bad and often not even then.
Few realize that with bedbugs self-treating usually fails, to judge by all the stories we have read from sufferers. (Yes, I am aware that there are exceptions.)
I believe very strongly that bedbugs are made worse by people self-treating. They often spread in this manner.
However, I think that one day, hopefully not too far away, effective methods of self-treatment will be available and then, and perhaps only then, the spread of bedbugs will end.
I don't see how multiple visits by a specially trained PCO will continue to be the solution in the future. It's too expensive and a burden on people in sensitive situations and, as we see again and again, it is a solution that is sometimes beyond the means, or more accurately, the will, of many.
However, that day is not today, that is for sure.

Yes, there will always be people who will self-treat with over the counter products. Shame, lack of money, lack of knowledge, fear, being overwhelmed, wanting a locus of control, in a status where they can't talk to their landlord (immigration status, subject to eviction for other reasons), elderly, wanting more green solutions, desperate and can't wait for a slow landlord, terrified that pesticides they can't choose will hurt their pets, ... even scam bedbug products are selling (ask me about the sonic pest conrol device I bought!)
But one product should be coming out, hopefully next year, that we will ALL buy if it is available to consumers (and with the Internet I hope it will be)...aggregate pheromone traps that will let us know if we have bedbugs and if we have them, might give us an indication of how heavy our infestation is. Oh, blessed day. We will not have to "prove" that we have bedbugs. We will not have to defend ourselves. We can show our landlords, our PCOs, our spounses, our college dorm administrators... we will be able to show them we have bedbugs. That's one product I wish I could buy NOW.

These aggregate pheromone traps, will they be expensive? Yes, now we can show partners in denial that we do have bbs, and pcos, and landlords. How do these things work? Are they like one-time use? I really hope these will be affordable to everyone!
Keets, sonic pest control...shame on people and businesses who are scamming from this!

Parakeets:
Come-on now, please elaborate on these pheromone traps. Pheromones, that's something to do with the sexual hormones, isn't it, of the bed bugs, I mean?

I haven't read that in it's entirety, but it appears to explain a fair bit about pheromones with respect to insects and pest management.. bedbugs are not mentioned (I scanned it with 'find in this page') but other bugs are...

I believe this is what Parakeets is referring to:
http://bedbugger.com/2007/03/15/good-news-bed-bug-aggregate-pheromones/We got the tip off about their development from people involved in the research. But they're not available yet. Back in March it was "2-3 months" away. Be hopeful but do not hold your breath. Nothing available right now can do this with bed bugs.

What ever happened with this? Is there any more news about this. It's been about a year now.

I am trying to self treat for two reasons.
#1 I'm trying not to use a PCO, because I'm not thrilled with spraying poisons all over my house. Besides, my wife is very sensitive to things, even household cleaners and I'm afraid of how it might affect her.
#2 The cost is outragous! I've had estimates from anywhere from $1500 to $4500. I'll have to take out a loan to pay for it!
