Bed BUGS OMG!
(10 posts)-
I recently have been fighting a bed bug problem. I found out that I am severely allergic to the point that I have to go emergently in to the doctor for steroid shots, breathing treatments, and prescription antihistamines, causing my all ready heart murmur to worsen, the bites turn in to big welps. Im a single mother with kids and have no one to lean on for help with them. I have had the exterminator out 4 times now, and again this Thurs.
Im exhausted and have done everything every website, exterminator, literature has said, and yet they still exists. I want to try the Climbup or your bug dome which is more effective, but have spent $1000+ on this issue and have exhausted my finances, trying to stay out of the hospital. Looking for anyway to get these things destroyed. Im scared. Im on anti-anxiety meds, due to the trauma these things have caused me.
I sleep in clothing covering all my skin, including long socks and gloves, and wear Deet bug repellent to bed everynight.
My bed is away from the wall, night stands, box springs and mattress are incased. I have bagged and washed everything washable, thrown out many things such as pillows, mattress covers, papers, magazines. Had the entire place, sprayed, dusted, fogged, and foamed twice.
The exterminator is working with me unusually intense due to the nature of my life threatening allergic reaction from even 6 bites.
I need anyone to help!!
The company I bought the mattress encasement is sending me a complimentary incasement to double up to help ease my issue, due to the severity of my allergic reaction. Im not asking for a hand out, I just need help to keep these things from killing me.

DO u have another place to stay?
Also, I have heard foggers don't work... are you sure your exterminator has experience w/ BB's?
You should definitely get in touch with one of the professionals on this forum.
I've had the allergic reactions (although not as severe) and I know what they feel like.
I wish you the best of luck in solving this problem as quickly as possible. -
Thanks.
No other place to stay but my couch! This is the worse night mare imaginable, and its not going to get better from the news headlines lately. Due to not being able to use DDT, is the problem!!
Im willing to find some, and use it!! -
Sorry to hear all this, Tamara.
As buggery indicated, lots of PCOs aren't good with BB. There have been a few cases reported on these boards with clients treating up the wazoo, when it turned out not to be BB at all.
What is your BB evidence? Please summarize what other steps you've taken to treat/prevent? Are your neighbors re-infesting you or are you actually being exposed somewhere other than at home? Also, avoid the DEET. It does not repel BB, may be causing you irritation and (I've learned first-hand) can burn holes in your encasement. As for DDT, at this point it's like unicorns, a mythical cure-all. It has been out of use for 30+ years and BB were documented resistant well before that. Any you find today is likely to be fake, unstable or impotent. There are tools and techniques that do work and more are on the way.
Stick with us, you're with smart, caring people. Best of luck.

Deathlyallergic, I am so sorry you have to deal with this issue.
Be super careful, Deathlyallergic. We have had a few people who were rushed to hospital with anaphylaxis. It's extremely rare of course -- this is out of thousands of people. But if you have trouble breathing, or your body is swelling, please seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Some of the bed isolation techniques here might be worthwhile to you. They are not for everyone, but you're very allergic.
Four treatments is not unusual. It does not necessarily mean you don't have a good PCO. If you're in a multi-unit building or otherwise being re-exposed (for example, encountering them at work, school, etc.), then this source needs to be uncovered and dealt with. Alternatively, it may be that you just need more treatment. You CAN get rid of bed bugs so please do not lose hope.

I want to try the Climbup or your bug dome which is more effective....We have not seen any research yet showing how effective the Bug Dome is. I would not buy something like that unless you had more information.

my evidence is that I have caught them on my bed, the adult ones, took it to the doctor for lab testing and confirmed.
Then caught more alive and dead after the exterminators first treatment, and confirmed.
Ive encased my box springs and mattress, bed is 6 + inches away from the wall and night stands, coated the bed legs with vaseline, bagged and washed everything washable, thrown out what wasn't , inspect all my clothing before putting it on. set up weekly treatment from exterminator, I realize it takes several treatments, last resort is the climbup from usbedbugs.com, people tell me to move, but that defeats the purpose til we find where they are coming from, every time the exterminator comes out, we can't find them. -
try the climbups. Make sure there are no bugs on the frame of the bed. I had 2 treatments with a professional and their were still bb in the wood frame. I took the whole bed apart myself and found live bugs the PCO missed. I went crazy and threw out the bed, kept the encased mattress and bought a new metal frame and am using the climbups, someone has been sleeping in that bed for 3 weeks with no new bites. The climbups have caught a few bb's trying to get into the bed.

So far, after my last battle, I came to the conclusion my mattress pad was a huge culprit, the casement had traces of their stains, my mattress pad was very thick and mattressy, don't think it killed off all the BB when washed and dried cause of its cali king size and thickness, I have since removed it, just put a sheet over the encasement, isolated my bed, put the climbups under the frame legs, and none have shown in the climbups, and I haven't been bitten in 2 weeks.
I still have the exterminator come out weekly, I still inspect all my clothes before donning them, and Im still as paranoid as hell and still sleep with a suit of armour, but I did leave a small portion of my shin/calf with out clothing and no bites thus far.
hears hoping!! -
I really hope your problem is on it's way to being under control deathlyallergic and you have my empathy and sympathy. My PCO was last here 2 weeks ago and told me at the time that my infestation was "under control" but in the last couple of days the evil couch where everything is concentrated has bbs popping up on it everywhere, albeit unfed and nasty little ones (no adults) so something has apparently hatched. GROSS! I am just as diligent in my efforts to keep this contained by daily hot laundry and keeping our shoes outside, everything sealed and bagged, showering just before leaving, dressing in my kitchen, nothing on the floor, etc. If anyone in Denver has any ideas on how I could get some help in getting this couch out of here and destroyed I would really appreciate it. Thanks for all the support from these forums-they are a lifesaver!!
