Just a scary fact that they can be found anywhere or you can be exposed at anytime.
    Confirmed! Bed Bug ID'ed.

A woman working in a bakery found a bug crawling on her arm while at work. This is the niece of the owner (who is a friend) they had no clue what it was.. He was frantic and asked me to ID it this morning. Well it's a bed bug.

Tomorrow I get to play detective and inspect the 4 apartments above the bakery and then also the woman's home, 30 miles away. He said "I hear you can never get rid of these things" I'm wondering if I’m going to eat free Italian pastries for life when this is over = ) I’m gaining 20 lbs. for sure on this one lol.

KQ, maybe you can share the Italian pasties with some of your other clients. I've been stress-eating for 7 months now thanks to bedbugs (Haagen Dazs Rocky Road is my indugence of choice). FYI, I have you beat at 22 pounds.

I'm so jealous of people like you, BostonPCT. Since finding the bugs, healthy food just doesn't seem appealing. And my hips are suffering for it.

I wonder what type of exercise would be involved in a bedbug workout? Lifting mattresses? Strange yoga positions as the person tosses and turns in bed? Working out your sprayer arm? Vacuum lunges??

I'm thinking like a jumping jack routine where you hold 2 pillows in your hands while crashing the pillows into each other over your head, the eggs fall off and you can stomp on them with your feet. Running in place on the bed .. We can call this the bed bug stomp. 17oz. Bedlam can’s can take the place of small dumbbells. The trash bag toss will be like the shot put. The Queen size dead lift .. lol I’m thinking

lol .. You know... I had a treatment for mice the other day .. This lady was sooo panicked.. she was like are you sure you can get rid of these things? ... lol I was like sweetheart .. I can do this with my eyes closed. She was moving into the place and the mice took over the house. I did that last Saturday .. she called me today to tell me that 32 snap traps, out of 35 went off. I'll get to see the carnage tomorrow =) She is moving in on the first of March.

Oh man, I wish that was all I was dealing with (although, 32 traps is a lot...)! I still have to deal with the mouse problem, too. I'm still seeing droppings. This weekend I'm going to try to set up a trap like you taught me. Between the mice, bbugs, and roaches, July (when my lease is up) can't come soon enough. Although, I will DEFINITELY take proper measures to NEVER bring these creatures with me!

As for exercise, how about up and down those two flights of stairs for laundry almost every single day! And the mice, that's funny because lately I've been thinking of that scene in some movie about New York where Terri Garr has her entire bed surrounded by rat traps. I now understand that was a sad commentary with some humor sprinkled in.

Getting rid of External Wall Mounted Murphy Bed tomorrow, it's just prolonged this problem and is preventing me from CAULKING! Must caulk behind bed. Actually I'm looking forward to a big reduction when the bed's gone. It's just got this platform where the mattress sits and i think it's causing me problems that I could have significantly reduced had I eliminated it earlier. However now-fired PCO kept assuring me he could do it, in fact he was so good, he told me had I properly prepared he could have treated my little 416 sq ft slice of heaven in 15 MINUTES! That's when I decided we needed to part ways.

Is there a space/void behind the bed itself? If so you may want to try Fastout CS foam. Works right out of the can. http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/fastout-cs-foam-20-oz-p-1112.html has a 30 to 1 expansion ratio. You can drill a few small holes and get product into the areas that may be suspect. Check out the label & see if that may work for you.

    Hi All,

This may sound ridiculous, but my PCO is coming back tomorrow to apply what he calls "powder" to my apt. Apparently it contains the usual boric acid, drione dust, and believe it or not, icing sugar. He says it attracts the bugs out and into the dust. I thought he was crazy 'till I read the title of this thread. Maybe bed bugs do like cake, after all!

This guy sounds like a pastry. What on earth is he talking about?

As for the problem this thread started about .. I found the source! Turns out the building upstairs is infested (4 Apartments / 3 with confirmed problems). Has been for 2 years. OMG do I have my work cut out for me. Imagine having a problem for 2 years and never telling your land lord (who BTW) is ready willing and able to do whatever it takes to get rid of the problem.

    PS. I only had 1 Boston Cream & 2 Espressos =)

ARe you sure he said icing sugar?

KillerQueen was joking when he said they like cake - he said that because he found the problem in a bakery that happened to be below severely infested apartements

they like warm-blooded, CO2 emitting people not sugar!!!

I would check that again if I were you - bedbugs are attracted to heat and CO2 not sweets

2 years? Holy moly, that's a really long time to be dealing with this without getting the LL involved, ESPECIALLY if they're willing to help! No wonder the bugs were venturing down towards the pastries! I would too, after 2 years upstairs!

Dang, and I thought you were going to tell us that a cannoli is an effective substitute for the "Nightwatch" gadget and Doug's K9s.
    :(

FWIW, we all know that BBs can show up anywhere, carried by anyone and on anything, so yes, your local bakery counts. BTW, my "avatar" was shot in a bakery near my mom and dad's that's in a building that bedbugregistry.com reports is "totally infested". Its neighbors include a bank, a phone shop and get this, a bed linen store.

I wonder if there's any chance the bbs who eat the icing sugar could develop diabetes??
    Talk about sweet revenge...

I think we should set up a 'crazy ideas' thread for stuff like this. We're all so creative! I just had a vision of Lady MacBeths line changing to "out damned bug" instead of "out damned spot" perhaps we could re-write the Bards work to feature the bbs as the villans!

I see ads for the CBCs period show 'The Tudors' (here in Canada, think it's about Henry 8 or King Richard??) and I see the lovely, and far too clean, looking lady draped across the chaise lounge smooching with the handsome king/prince, and all I think of is "that chaise is probably infested..." or "bet those heavy dresses were crawling..."

No chance as they do not have biting mouth parts, they are suckers in many different ways. I think the icing sugar man is a little half baked and as they know from a few thermal failures half baked will just not do.

Good point David, but what if the person develops diabetes and the bugs ingest the blood wouldn't their blood sugar go haywire?:) Or if the person drinks a LOT would the bugs get hammered too? Pointless musing here I know...

    Hi,

It would take a lot of bed bugs to affect the blood sugar levels, you are more likely to notice changes in the levels of iron in the blood which can have a much more significant affect on the health as modern diets tend to leave people deficient anyway.

I have treated homes of alcoholics so can rule out your chances of getting them all drunk, if a bloke who only eats once a day and yet consumes a litre of gin and 40 cigarettes a day had 50-60,000 bed bugs in his house I cant really recommend it as a control method.

The only pests I know about that have become addicts are the famous crack addicted south London squirrels that hang out in an area frequented by users. When the police raid the area the squirrels sometimes strike it lucky and get the drugs that the sellers throw to avoid the police. I will try and find a link about it.

    Jim,

I found the link to the story:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2005/oct/08/drugsandalcohol.patrickbarkham

It appears that NY and Washington beat us to it.

Interestingly enough the park where they are most commonly reported is at the junction of two bed bug corridors.
