Bed bug trauma
(2 posts)-
Hi everyone, this is my bed bug story...
It all started one week ago when I discovered some bites in my arms. After some days I found new bites so on Friday I decided to inspect my bed. I found some blood spots on the sheets and pillow, and when I was inspecting the comforter I found it, a bed bug like 5mm long.
At that time I didn't know what it was, so I lifted it with a tissue and crushed it and then the blood came out of it. Then I was freaked out and after googling it I discovered the world of bed bugs! Oh what a terrible day!
That bug was crushed and impossible to recognize, but I needed confirmation. So I took the linens and duvet off the bed and put them directly into the washing machine and then started inspecting my mattress and bed frame.
At the beginning I didn't find anything since I was looking for a bug the size of the first one I had seen. But then I noticed some very small rounded things in an area of the lower face of the mattress and then I discovered it, the nest!!
It was right there, in a crack of one of the wooden tables supporting the mattress. So I took my scotch tape and started my cleaning labor. I inspected and hopefully removed the eggs and nymphs of all the affected wooden tables, and the lower face of the mattress.
And I searched all the mattress and caught 3 or 4 tiny bed bugs. After 5 hours I was exhausted, it was 3am but I didn't want to go back to bed. Anyway, I decided I had done every possible thing at that point so I went to bed. During the night I woke every hour thinking I was getting bitten. But I made it through the night without any apparent bites.
I told my land lord today, and he called the PCO who is coming on Monday. But from what the landlord told me, I get the idea that he doesn't want to pay for the treatment and my lease doesn't state anything about pests (I live in Pittsburgh by the way).
But what I hate the most about this situation is the paranoid state that I'm in right now. Especially after reading a lot of posts here I can't look at my bed, clothes and entirely carpeted apartment in the same way. Apparently everyone that has found a bed bug has had negative experiences with them, that are not only costly but also mentally exhausting!
And I decided to write in this forum because I don't have anyone else that I can share this experience with since I don't want to tell my friends about it because I'm afraid they might think I am a dirty person (which by the way is what I felt the landlord implied when he told me "I've been here for 10 years and we've never had this before").
One of the few questions I have right now is this, should I be concerned about picking up eggs from the carpet with my feet and transferring them to other areas of my apartment?

The short answer to your question is no.
The eggs are typically laid in the brooding centers & are firmly attached to a surface. It would be unlikely that you would come in contact with eggs while walking around your residence.
