Last week my daughter had some bites near her hips (two sets of three) and a few going down her leg. Since then I have been on the hunt for evidence. Yesterday I found a black bug shell about 4 mm and then today found one in the vacuum cleaner. I have looked on various websites to see what a bed bug shell looks like. These are black with horizontal ribbing. I am curious if bed bug shells are black or clear.

    Hi,

They are generally clear / a sort of opaque tissue paper appearance.

There is a picture of one I took a few years ago here:

    http://www.bed-bugs.co.uk/index_files/Gallery.htm

Look for the image with the caption "Molted skin shed in the slat of a bed. BedBugs must molt their skins 5 times before becoming adults"

There are also a lot of shed skins in the image on the row above.

If you can provide a picture of what you have found we may be able to identify it for you.

If you can't post a clear picture, you can send it out to Lou Sorkin or a university like Harvard to get an ID.

    Hi,

I have up loaded the images from bugging out and have hosted them here:

    http://www.bed-bugs.co.uk/documentbase/insectid20081120.JPG

I am not sure what it is but know its not anything bed bug related that I recognise.

I would send the samples you have off for full identification but I am almost 100% sure they will come back as something other than bed bugs.

    Hi,

Can you take a picture from the underside of the sample.

It is certainly the right shape for bed bugs but something tells me it is not and I would rather have ac loser look at the legs and underside before I make a call.

    Good image resolution though.

    Hi,

The USB microscope for field studies arrived in the office today so I took a few minutes to test it out with some bed bug cast skins and a few dead samples.

    http://www.bed-bugs.co.uk/documentbase/CASTSKINweb.jpg

    and

    http://www.bed-bugs.co.uk/documentbase/ADULTDEADweb.jpg

It is extremely hard to get a scale of the image with this type of equipment but the main reason for sharing them it is show the colour and paper like appearance of the skins.

Hope it helps educate a few.

David, those pictures are cool but still really gross at the same time! Have fun with your new tool, I think it could be a great asset to getting those close up shots. Again, as always, thanks for the things you help us with.

I had no idea what a cast skin looked like, I have never seen one. Creepy!

    Hi,

I have been playing around a little this evening and have some other footage to share that I have put up on youTube. Its not flash footage but its a very clear image.

    The link is here:

If anyone wants to edit a little music to it I think a tango would be in order.

I actually have more footage including the answers to how they right themselves but its a bit painful to watch without some sound or commentary. I will work on that as time permits next week.
