I just recently moved into a new place and came from an apartment w/bed bugs. We took the bed, but left both couches behind. With two matress covers, I've still noticed a few bites since the move...and for the past three nights I have been finding something in the bed that looks like it night be eggs. They look just like sesame seeds. At first I thought the cats were tracking stuff from the hard wood floors to the bed. But tonight is the third or fourth night and I've found even more. The weird part is that they aren't in the mattress, they are spread out on top of the sheets! Kind of like when you eat in bed and get crumbs all over the place. Could these be bed bug eggs? I don't know why they would lay them on top of the sheets. My only thought is that they can't really get into the mattress to lay them.

I am putting some in a little cup with a lid and I read it takes 1-3 weeks for them to hatch. This way I can know for sure....

Heather, it might be worthwhile for you to check around your cat's bottom, right near their anus for any of these little "sesame seed" type things stuck to their fur because it sounds an awful lot like tape worm eggs to me. They are the right shape and although translucent initially, will turn a golden colour when they dry out. Gross, I know. You are unlikely to get them, but if you have small children who mouth things they could be at risk. Worth checking and a trip to the vet, they're easy enough to treat if its them. Here is an article which includes an image of tapeworm eggs near the bottom of the page:

I forgot, but if they're tapeworm eggs they won't hatch in your jar because they're not in the right environment (inside a body - eww!)

Thanks LJ. As much as I really hate to say it right now I am pretty sure you're right. And I think our kitten has them. I'm really disgusted. Scheduling a vet appt as soon as possible.

Is the world about to end? What bug is going to pop up next?
