    Good afternoon everyone,
Anyone besides me freakin' a little? Summer is the time for bug bites of all kinds. Are there any Warriors who believe that they may have won the bed bug battle concerned about bites at this time of year?

Funny you should write this, ltdan. I was just this weekend daring to feel a little hopeful that maybe I'd seen the last of my bat bugs. But it's been hot and muggy in NoVA and I spent some time outside both Saturday and Sunday. OK, so I knew mosquitoes were chewing up my legs as I worked in the garden on Sunday, but I woke up this morning to find an itchy new bite on my wrist that I don't remember from yesterday.

What is it??? Where did it come from???

    yes buggeroff.

I have not seen a bed bug dead or alive since mid Jan 2006. Three PCO visits prior and I have steamed, DE, bedlam etc.
even bought bed bug encasements. I have dismantled bed, painted and have new mattress and box springs.
My wife freaked because she has a couple of bites on her arm but we did find a small black flea on the dog and dog uses advantage or whatever they call that stuff, top of the line. This is approaching the time of year that we discovered the infestation last year so we are a little stressed. Heard the news today that the NYC is spraying for west nile in the Bronx. Man, I wish that they would spray the whole world. Ihate winter but I am finding myself hoping that we get a couple of cold months but without too much snow.

    Would more people comment please?

I freaked out this weekend because I saw a mosquito in the house and didn't want to have to deal with bites inside the house.

Do bed bugs still bite in the winter?

Last week I was out with my mum and we had lunch outside in a kind of shady area. Right during lunch I broke out in five big old welts and for the life of me I couldn't tell whether they were mosquito bites or BB bites. It was awful...

    Beatrice,
Yes bed bugs bite in winter. My grandfather always said that he liked a cold winter because it killed bugs. I mentioned winter because I would like winter to kill as many bugs as cold could but I do not think cold will work for bed bugs. Right now all bugs piss me off, I hate them all.

Amen to that. A mosquito bit me while I was cooking dinner yesterday and I damn near knocked myself out with the pan I was washing, I was so eager to get it. I never liked bugs, but now it's definitely personal.

I feel the same way, lieutenantdan! I've had nothing that itched and swelled like the bites we got when we found out about our infestation in May and no bug sightings since the end of June--and yet, every itch, every "bump" on my skin, I freak out a little bit and worry, "is this the sign that we never really got rid of them?" And, of course, any kind of other insect bite makes me nuts, even if I know I've been out for a walk in the evening when the mosquitoes were out and knew I'd gotten a bite. I used to wish that, if I could get rid of any bug, it would be mosquitoes, but bed bugs have taken their place at the top of the list.

Anyone, how long until this feeling dies down?

    Hi all...

I haven't posted in awhile because I didn't want to jinx anything. I won't even begin to write a success story until winter is here. Although I believe my bed bugs are gone,I still get bitten by black flies and mosquitoes since I spend a lot of time outdoors. Although I use OFF I still get bitten especially around my ankles or the tops of my feet. It really does freak me out being bitten by bugs now more than ever. I was usually bitten on my arms or torso by BB's. I love summer and being outdoors and never really minded bugs all that much. They were sinply a nuisance but after dealing with BB's I'll never be the same.

It's good to know I am not alone with these feelings about bugs in general now...

Nobugsonme, yes you are correct it was Jan. 2007.

meckman, I do not know how long it would take. Sometimes I think that I will be this way till the day I die. I had no reactions to the bites for four months while my wife was waking up crying. Her ankle swelled twice and she was in pain. Now how could anyone think that bed bugs are not a health hazard. If I hear a reporter state that one more time I will call that reporter and curse the ass out.

goingbuggy, I feel the same way.

Please, more comments. It is a good feeling to know that I am not alone.

    hi Dan,

You're definitely not alone. The past two summers for me have been pretty bad. I spent most of my vacation time battling bed bugs. I no longer feel like travelling as I know I would be very anxious about bed bugs especially in Europe where it can be mild.

After the bug experience, I have come to really cherish a cold long Canadian winter. I'm lucky to live in a northern climate where this is possible. Last year, we had a good winter but the year before that I remember we had a really mild winter and an early summer that came full force before spring really had a chance to show up. The consequences were more bugs because the old populations survived the winter and the new populations contributing to a horrible buggy summer. I also remember that the tree pollens went crazy and it was a horrible horrible spring for allergies. (I'm an allergy sufferer as well.)

I hope we have an extra cold/long one this year. (I never thought I'd ever say that.) In fact, I'm kind of thinking that an igloo or ice hotel may have its good points...

    Hi TorontoBugged,
We had a very mild winter last year in NYC and the bugs are out in full force. I just sent several different specimens to an entomologist friend for review. Not BBs but still I am curious.
I will make a new post because now I think that we may have some sort of flea problem.

Co-signing on the general elevated anxiety.

I got several insect bites a couple of months ago. They popped up around 10 pm after spending all day at a barbecue with a good chunk of time spent on a big tufted couch.

Of course, my first thoughts were bed bugs. I still don't know what they were. But the bites haven't come back since that day, so I guess that's lucky. It did re-ignite my habit of browsing the internet for bed bug info, and it got me to eventually register at this site.
