I know this has been discussed many times, but I am trying to figure out why microwaving won't kill the bugs. As far as I know, the microwave will only "cook" (heat) items that contain water. It seems to me that the bugs MUST have the smallest amount of water in their body, if not the blood of the host. Should this not be enough to kill them? I am not even thinking about the whole thermal ideas. It seems to me that if they have even a trace of water in their bodies, that the waves would heat and destroy them. Thoughts?

There is nothing to technically stop a microwave being effective at killing bed bugs other than the practical fact that it does not work.

I have conducted some experiments myself in the past and can confirm that the items I was trying to decontaminate would have been destroyed and the microwave damaged long before the bed bugs showed signs of death. After many minutes on high power the items were smoldering but the bed bugs were moving faster than ever.

Sometimes things are simply not a good idea and certainly not an avenue to go down. If you run a microwave with low to no water inside (i.e. no food to heat) then there is a high risk of damage and with that risk of damage comes the risk of microwaves "leaking" into your living space. This is obviously a bad idea and one of the main reasons why we all say don't do it and don't even try to do it because its simple NOT a good idea and does not work.

Sadly when subjects pop up to the surface like this someone somewhere will have a go and see what happens, I sincerely hope that no-one gets hurt this time and that those searching for this subject in future appreciate that its a sleeping dog that is best left fast asleep.
