Here's a nice little story for the holidays about an alternate type of success.

We've been fighting bed bugs since summer, no competent PCOs in the area so I've been self-treating and using only over-the-counter products. I've had ups and downs (the last down a few weeks ago when the neighbors moved) but now have things under control to the point that I can lie on the floor watching movies or reading for hours and not get bit. I can sit at my desk and write for hours and not get bit (and wear shorts and a tee shirt too).

The only place we're still getting bit is me on the metal futon (the hollow metal tubes are a nightmare but I have the futon isolated so they can't easily get off) and my son on his bed, which is wood with lots of cubby holes. Still, we aren't getting a lot of bites just enough to let us know that hey, we aren't alone.

But the success is this: Even through all of this struggle we've managed to not only get on with our lives but to pursue our goals. My son netted perfect scores in two SAT subject areas and I'm almost finished with a very long freelance project that has been not only satisfying from a creative point of view but will net us enough money to move in March or April.

So you CAN still live your life in the midst of bed bugs, you can still succeed--it doesn't have to be all gloom and doom, though of course the gloom and doom is still a big part of it.

Happy holidays everyone. And don't let the bugs get you down.

    Hi Bee Bee:
Thanks for sharing that story and congratulations to you son! Very impressive!

We've had a lot of doom and gloom this year. But during the BB battle, I managed to finish a major project in DC and get a promotion.

And just this evening, we're emptying the last of the bags out of the diningroom -- reclaiming one more room -- just in time for Christmas. In July we were living in two rooms, barely functioning. Now, we've almost reclaimed every room. I used to moan and groan at how small the apartment was, but not anymore. I actually cried with joy as I moved the chairs around the diningroom table. We've been eating off our laps for 5 months, but starting tomorrow at breakfast, we can eat at a table. I'm so happy.

The battle isn't over, but I'm grateful that, even if it's just tonight, I have tears of joy instead of tears of frustration.

Sometimes we have big successes, and sometimes it's just small successes. But heck, they are all SUCCESSES no matter how you measure them.

    Happy holidays!!
    Kate

    HelpIamgoinginsane,

I know how hard it is when you realize you have bedbugs. I remember siting under my kitchen table, crying and screaming and telling my mother on the phone that it was the worst thing that happened to me and that I just wanted to die. (I have a tendency to overreact). This was 4 months ago. After 4 treatments, i suspect that I still have bedbugs, but things are way easier. I know it sounds impossible at this point, but you will see, life goes on even if you have bedbugs. You just have to change your habits and focus on the small successes that you can get. Your life is not only bedbugs, do not let them influence the other spheres of your life, even if it is hard. And well, they are disgusting and annoying, but they are just bugs. One other thing, to take actions (finding a PCO, getting encasements, washing and bagging your clothes - nothing that can interfere with a treatment) may make you feel better, you may feel that you have "some" control on the situation.

Best of luck, and hang on! You are not alone in this situation!
