Alone and Afraid with BedBugs
(3 posts)-
Dear Bed Bugger Forums.
I do hope I have come to the right place to voice my concerns and hardships.
I live in England, and have just started my second year of University. On Thursday the 24th of September, I moved into our new rented flat to prepare for term to begin...........By Friday night, I realised my body had an unusual number of bites. What most startled me was the way in which they were patterned. I have four in a line on the inside of my thigh. I have sets of 3-5 bites shaped in squares or triangles on both hips, and ankles.
Of course, as I am sure you all well know, the dreaded mention of BedBugs was brought up in conversation by my Flatmate who had moved in on the same day. Luckily he has travelled across the World on various trips and encountered BedBugs before, so he set about checking my mattress. Since Saturday, we have checked the mattress, bed covers, skirting board crevasses and various suspected items and found NOTHING! There were no obvious blood specks/trails, no obvious eggs casings, and no actual BedBugs to be seen.
Friday night I slept in my bed anyway as I was very drunk and did not really think things were an issue. I counted my bites on Saturday, and the number had risen to ~30...
My flatmate did not have a clue where to find them. This is where the insomnia kicked in. After spending the whole of Saturday evening reading up on the internet, I found I could not sleep...For the past 2 nights I have not slept, this being near my 40th hour without sleep. Saturday night, I found myself ringing the City Council Emergency branch and asking for help. They could provide none apart from suggesting I ring Pest Control services on Monday. I rang my mother at home and asked for advice. Within a few hours she had contacted the top specialist PCOs in England, and got back to me with this:
1. I must find evidence/specimen, in order to call out the PCO.
- Now my flatmate and I have already looked, and we cannot find anything! Tomorrow if I do not collapse of exhaustion, I will go through all my items in my room, inc clothes. But I am scared of them!
2. I must not use my own remedies as it may scare them into another room and towards my flatmate, which would cause them to spread.
- Now three more flatmates have moved in since Thursday. Will the BedBugs move into their rooms if they find that I am awake and much harder to get to?
3. I cannot use any type of pesticide or prevention measures in the meantime, due to the risk of making them move, and spreading it.
- Now, this is AGONISING!! I have to stay in my room at night.. with Bugs I cannot find, but manage to get onto my body and suck my blood! Ridiculous. So at this current moment in time, I am sitting in my Computer Chair, with ALL lights OFF. The only light is coming from my laptop screen. I have placed my chair on white A3 sheets of paper, and I have my feet on the seat, and a flashlight on the keyboard.
My Plan is to catch one of these ****** attempting to climb onto the white sheets and up my chair in order to get to me. Oh I am also sitting in Boxers, so I can see the rest of my body. Every 10-20minutes I am checking the paper, the floor and my body for signs of them... So far... NOTHING. It is 3:30am, and with no sleep for 40hours, my body is reaching its limit.
What I want, is to find just ONE bug, somehow catch it tonight, get the PCOs in, and have everything cleaned. But at the moment I just CAN'T find any sign of them. Be it eggs, blood stains or otherwise!
I have been told by my flatmate that if I move everything away from my bed they find it harder to reach me, as their heat sensors are actually quite weak. So I have moved all my clothes and suitcases etc into the furthest corner on top of a big wardrobe about 3-4 metres from the bed. By moving all my stuff into the furthest possible corner, will they not just end up lying dormant til I move them closer to the bed again?????
If I find nothing tonight, I will be going to the shops today for ALOT of cellotape which I will double back and ring my bed with. I will then sleep in the afternoon as much as possible. I will also wear trousers with socks tucked into them, and a shirt tucked into my trousers, hopefully to avoid more bites if they do come to my bed mid-afternoon....
I do apologise for the very long post, but I have 4 hours of agonising and paranoia filled hours before sunlight.
I would appreciate any comments at all, be it support, help or sharing of experiences.
Thank you again for reading.El

perhaps it would be worth checking some of your worldwide traveler flatmate's stuff
his bed, clothing, closet, luggage, etc.
also, don't know how these are in your country, but unscrew the plates covering wall plugs near your bed and see if there are any signs there
try not to electrocute yourselfthey also bite during the day if they are hungry, so i'm not sure napping during the afternoon will make a difference

In my experience, sleeping during the day won't do a thing. It helps me to tell myself it will, but I know that isn't true as I've napped in the aft and evening and still woken with bites upon bites. Covering your body only means they'll likely go for your hands and face, which is humiliating. I've resorted to a teeshirt and boxers--I'd rather them on my arms and legs which I can hide.
