Advice for Vikane (truck) and moving afterwards? also LP's
(8 posts)-
I am moving and luckily since finding this site recently I now know about Vikane.
First can anyone detail their success of Vikaning a moving truck (lightly packed)?
Should we try and clean all our clothes first? What about Leather Jackets, or will
they truly be treated in the truck.I've heard the gas will penetrate boxes, but I can't imagine it truly gets everywhere?
What about procedures to make sure we take any with us?
New clothes and shoes, surely (I think they travel in shoes), but
what about our bodies?I once heard a PCO say the only way to get rid of them was to take an ice
cold shower, as they can travel on us.Also I have thousands of LP's. They are currently in plastic sleeves (open on one end)
I imagine I will have to take all the sleeves off so the gas can get in? These will be put in boxes.
I was thinking of punching air holes in all the boxes.
The problem as I see it is that something can crawl inside the LP jacket, and possibly
the gas can't get in.
What items should be baking in our oven @130 degrees for an hour or so?
I was thinking shoes and sneakers.
Any thoughts would be welcome. I didn't see a full FAQ for Vikaning while moving.

I once heard a PCO say the only way to get rid of them was to take an ice
cold shower, as they can travel on us.A cold shower is no less or more effective than a warm one. Water over 120 could kill them but isn't something you could take much of either.
Best to follow all procedures from the fumigation company. Ensure nothing is sealed in plastic, it can be in plastic but not sealed, and no organic matter were the big taboos from mine.

I am thinking even after the VIkane treatment of our truck, that after we move in to the new apartment, we should have it treated by traditional PCO just in case the Vikane missed anything.
Any thoughts?

If you are paying a lot of money for the Vikane gas fumigation, then you should enquire about guarantees. You should not also have to treat the new home, if everything was treated. If some things won't be treated, ask the company what they suggest.
There's no FAQ on how to prep for Vikane fumigation because we can't tell you how to prep or whether certain items will be reliably treated this way. The company you hire MUST do so, in detail. For your own safety and to make sure everything gets properly de-bugged.

I would not put the vinyl records in boxes. I had vikane done about 6 months ago and am one of the success stories. I used open plastic containers (think plastic file crates) and did not pack them so that the records were in them tighly. I would take off the plastic sleeves though. I also had a couple thousand vinyl records to move. The only ones I did bring were located right next to my bed (the main area of my infestation). I thought that may be a bit risky. I did however bring the ones from my living room and had no problem.
Clothes - leather - shoes ect can all go through the treatment. You should not have to bake anything or launder clothes prior putting them through treatment.
I aree with Nobugs though that the company you use should be giving you advice on how to pack. The biggest suggestions to give would be to use a truck one size larger than you need. David had given me this idea. My truck ended up being half full (lightly packed). I also used banana boxes as they already had holes in the sides for most of my things. If not I would cut holes to allow the gas to penetrate easier.
I wore old clothes and shoes when I packed the truck. Showered then changed into clean bagged clothes and a new pair of cheap shoes (kept in bags) then threw out what I had been wearing.
This link will take you to the Dow-Agro website. It is the FAQ's page on how to prepare a house for vikane. You follow the same procedures for doing a truck as you would for doing a house.

Once again the company you use should be furnishing you with this and any other info you need about how to pack.

Sorry teach me to read before I post. I meant to say - The only ones I did NOT bring were located right next to my bed (the main area of my infestation).
Origianl post was "The only ones I did bring were located right next to my bed (the main area of my infestation)."
The key word is NOT in that sentence. I did not bring the ones next to my bed.
Sorry about that.

Glad to see someone ask about LPs - we're still not sure if we have BBs, but all we ever think of, besides the cats, is the record collection. Thanks to all who advised, I will reevisit this thread if/when I need to do so! Record geeks unite!

I am going to be doing the same thing in a month, and I was wondering,
LPlistener, how did it work out?
