311 and registries
(3 posts)-
Should I call 311 and post my infestation on a registry even if my landlord has (thus far) agreed to hire my exterminator? From what I've read, it seems like 311 is what you use to light a fire under the landlord's butt. On the other hand, how else will NYC keep stats unless I call 311?

I wanted to bump this up in case anyone in NYC has any advice for you. I read your posts last night and really felt for you. You're in my prayers. Read the faqs on this site and start taking steps to deal with this.

If I were in rental accommodation, I would post the building address, but without self-identifying information. I've read enough to realize that many landlords tell tenants that they are the only one. Then, the tenant checks the registry and finds out that their neighbours, and even the prior tenant in their unit, has/had bedbugs. The registry is a valuable resource and an important tool.
You can post positive stuff with it, like your landlord is dealing with it fairly etc. Doesn't have to be critical, just factual.
In my case, I called Public Health (is that the same as 311?) and they are keeping my report confidential. They were helpful with information and they told me that this is a very under-reported issue. I am in favour of Public Health having real numbers.
