We would recommend not putting anything in an unfinished cedar chest. The reason is that if you have bed bugs they will attempt to implant their eggs on the rough inside finish. It is a definite real world fact that bed bugs do this.

I am a new, and in a way lucky, bedbug afflictee.

I say lucky because there is no doubt. I came home today to find one dead one on my blanket, and a dead one in my dog's water bowl.

I suppose it's lucky in SOME ways because the itchy spot on my shoulder is NOT due to poison ivy on something random of mine.

Anyway, in terms of dealing with the shiny new infestation I inherited when I rented this room, I made a couple decisions. First, I'm going to hang as much of my clothing as possible off the floor, either in the closet, or on lines, or any other way I can get it up and out of the way. I'm pretty sure the bugs are sequestered under the baseboards - it seems the best place for them.

I can't hang EVERYTHING up, though, and I do have a very nice cedar chest I bought a year ago. It's large, solid, and the cedar on the inside is un-finished, so as to have the maximum insect-repellant effect.

My question is this: If I wash clothes as hot as I can, and dry them as hot as I can, and then put them in the chest, will that ensure that the items in the chest will remain un-infected? Will bedbugs hide in raw cedar if they have other options?

I'm trying to get on top of this as soon as I can, on the off chance that the problem isn't huge yet, and maybe I can keep from the sleepless nights I've read about here. I think I can handle the spider nightmares I've been getting this week, as long as I can get back to sleep...
