I am not a bug expert, but the bedbug eggs I saw were always smooth in appearance.

I can see bedbug eggs with my naked eyes. Bedbugs eggs are not microscopic and they are not invisible. However they don't stand out easily if you don't know you are looking at them, and they are small, about 24 to 32 to an inch in my estimation. The ones I've seen are not in clusters but were laid in a grid pattern. The egg casings look larger because they hatch open on either side, like the doors of a tiny hatch back or something.

To answer your second question: The hatched egg shells I found were not sticky and I could brush them away. Yet the eggs before they hatched were incredibly sticky. I can't explain why, but can only tell you what I've observed.

Eggs are about 1mm and stay glued after.

The eggs may be laid out of sight in the nesting area though. Find a nest, and you can find eggs.

I have a related question: are the eggs still glued/sticky once they hatch?

I'd always thought/read that bedbugs eggs are "microscopic" and "impossible to see." Then, when I was discovering my infestation, I saw clusters of eggs (or what I thought were eggs) without even having to put my glasses on. Same with the photo that Nobugs just posted on the home page: the hatched egg in that photo certainly looks big enough to be seen without a microscope. So, what's the deal? Is it that unhatched eggs are tiny but the discarded, post-hatch egg casing is larger? I just don't get how a "microscopic" egg can suddenly become so obviously visible after the nymph hatches.
