The problem with the media coverage (or any carpet bombing media coverage) is that everyone is repeating the same news over and over again. Sadly, when the time comes when there will be real further developments, and I think there will be, the media will be tired of bed bugs in favour of the next crisis du jour.

Also, with all the stories being the same, you don't hear very much about actual developments even now. Except for the dogs which make for good media copy. Thermal makes pretty good copy too as you can have shots of them going vroom vroom in a person's living room.

the media has picked them up HEAVILY in the last 2 months. i'm in Brooklyn and we always talk about them here. they're the new hysteria. yes, the problem is getting larger but the media is using the stories as hysteric fill.

They were on NBC evening news last night. Bed Bugs news has been all over the internet(CNN, AOL, Yahoo, etc). The USA Today and local papers, and so on. I even had a Facebook friend complain about all the news in her status update.

Bed bugs really didn't even register with me at all until my mother suffered an outbreak in June in her assisted-living studio apartment. Housekeeping came in once a week to change her sheets and they didn't notice her mattress, box spring, and even pillow had become HUGELY stained by the bed bugs. They only sounded the alarm when someone saw some live bugs, and of course by that time the infestation had grown very severe.

My point is I hope the media keeps pounding away with this story. People need to be educated about these horrible pests.

Hey acs80!

I think the problem is definitely getting worse but don't believe it has gotten exponentially worse in the last few weeks. Rather, the level of bugs has just reached a point where the majority of people can no longer ignore the problem. Since it is now a "safe" topic for the media, all those stories we keeping hearing will be repeated and I suspect the news will run the topic into the ground.

Even Craig Ferguson talked about them tonight.

I'm just coming here to vent, I guess, since no one else in my "real" life fully understands my total hysteria and paranoia over bed bugs. I'm in the midst of trying to figure out whether or not I have them (my only sign is a few mystery bites on my back that I found a few days ago) and I feel like I'm getting signs from the universe or something. Seriously, it seems like EVERYWHERE I look I see or hear a report about bed bugs. Last night I got myself all worked up reading this site and decided I was going to read a Newsweek magazine to calm down before bed. And what's the first story I see in the table of contents? A report on bed bugs, of course. I turned on NPR today and there was yet another show about bed bugs (the third show I've heard on NPR in two weeks). One of my favorite websites averages at least one story about a bed bug infestation per day.

What the hell? Has the problem become markedly worse in the past few months, or is everyone in the media suddenly just covering the hype? I remember the swine flu hysteria from last year, when it seemed like every report and story was about H1N1 (I freaked out about that, too). Are stories on bed bugs suddenly the trendy thing?

Is anyone else's anxiety exacerbated from the media? Just wanted to get this off my chest and see what everyone else is feeling.

Thanks!
