cilecto- thank you for the links.. the pco never asked that any of that prepration (cornell link) be done. ugh.

Bear in mind that your mom's tenants may not be able or willing to take an active role in prep. They may smile, nod and then do what they do, or don't. Neither you nor mom should beat themselves over this.

Hi, MPM. It's great that you're looking out for your mom.

I assume you're in NYC, likely Brooklyn, where Kingsway is based.

What Paul said above.

I'd also like to recommend some guides from our Resources page that lay out best practices in bed bug control, particularly for people who manage congregate facilities.
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/emergingdiseases/Bed_Bug_Manual_v1_full_reduce_326605_7.pdf
http://www.nysipm.cornell.edu/publications/bb_guidelines/

That said, (from a non-expert perspective) in places where turnover is high and clientele is limited in ability to comply with protocols, BB control is likely to be more of a challenge.

Perhaps you can have a consultation with a "master" practitioner, do refine a strategy for your mom's business.

Dear mypoormom,

Wow, there a lot of ground to cover in what you're asking but it is possible to succeed in this situation if you adopt the correct procedures.

Where are these homes located? (for referral purposes)

In dealing with similar situations in the past one recommendation that helped siginficantly was to modify the buildings and furnishings to be less suitale for bed bugs.

This was done by:

> Using metal framed beds instead of wood frames.

> Using metal or plastic shelvind with plastic "cubbies" for clothing storage.

> Sealing & caulking to reduce & eliminate potential harborages.

> Replacing all wooden and wire & carboard hangers with plastic hangers.

> Using plasit trash bags and plastic trash cans.

> Reducing clutter and stored items.

> Using vacuums & steamers.

> Using the dryer.

> Installing encasements on all mattresses & box springs.

> Conducting suitable inspections often.

> Using bed bug blockers.

> Dust applications to all utility penetrations.

> Suitable residual applications.

> Staff & resident education.

Hope this helps ! paul b.

Hi.. I really need help for my mom.. she is a single mom and business owner.. she has 4 houses and she rents them to homeless people (some type of not for profit thing) .. because of the types of people she rents to, she always gets bedbugs.. and has received no true eradication despite a lot of time and money spent. She uses a pco from Kingsway but I asked her questions about encasements, heat treatments, de, and she says he uses none of them nor does he suggest them. He sounds like he is really just taking her money spraying random things and disappearing. My mom spends a lot of time and hurts her back weekly, going to each of the houses and spraying 70% wintergreen alcohol and dry steaming all of the beds.. my mother swears by this method but has been dealing with this for 3 years. I had to move out of one of her apartments because my room became infested with bedbugs and she used nothing but this alcohol.. the pco she uses didn’t come..

My mom really wants to do this herself, won’t use a pco. But I am willing to hire one and pay myself.

Can anyone:
1.	Sugest a good pco
2.	Give me tips that I can give to my mom so she can get rid of the bedbugs herself
I have been reading this forum a lot, there is a wealth of information and it seems as if whenever someone suggest someone good there are 20 more people saying how terrible the idea is.. the only thing that I realize that really may work though it seems controversial here is heating the houses for a few hours and also using DE (amorphous?).. is this the case?

O yea.. my interest has become so big because I have bedbugs again, and I want to just wash all my things move and leave my furniture here like I did the last time, but I love this apartment and really just want to get rid of the bedbugs.. I was thinking of purchasing bedlam, DE, and packtites and starting from there.. but if anyone has better suggestions please help. I have been up since last night reading the messageboards and can’t sleep..
