Hi Doug,

I can't go into as much detail as I would like as some of this information is unpublished at the second but basically if you look into the evolution of bed bugs you will see that they come from a very different path to other blood feeders.

The vector transmission of mosquitoes for example is all to do with infected blood passing from mosquito into the next victim. In the case of bed bugs the flow seems to be almost completely in one direction and thus the risk of introduction is not present.

The reason why I say feeding soon after from an open wound is that the directional flow being different from mosquitoes then the infected blood would have to be in the surface of the styles and not flushed through before the blood meal is drawn.

The only other option is mechanical transmission on the stylus tip but the sheath may also have a cleaning function to stop that.

I think the best reason for why they cant transmit diseases like mosquitoes is that they are not closely related to insects that do transmit diseases such as mosquitoes. The developmental paths are a lot more diverse than we would initially give credit for.

David

PS I still think the nanophages are the exception to this though.

The main reason why they do not transmit disease is that they have evolved up a different evolutionary path to insects that are also obligate blood feeders such as mosquitoes. The path that they have travelled has certain physiological features that would make transmission extremely unlikely if not impossible unless a bed bug stops mid feed on an infected person and immediate starts to feed on another within a matter of a few seconds through an open wound.

David

I follow the reasoning that bed bugs do not appear to be a competent vector & that mechanical transmission is considered a theoretical possibility.

I am curious about why you think that mechanical transmission would need to be through an open wound in such a short time frame?

The rarity of those circumstances would explain the lack of field observation for mechanical transmission ..... coupled with the fact that such an event would usually occur below the public health surveillance radar & remain undetected.

Can you elaborate on the certain physiological features that would make transmission extremely unlikely if not impossible.... I've heard researchers speculate about mechanisms that might suppress viral replication in bed bugs, but I not seen anything definitive in published research in the US

1. Don't even think it.
2. The DC insiders take care of themselves. Full health, best day-care. I assume that the WH and the Capitol complexes have their own in house PCOs (with every tool available on the market) who'll be there within the hour (if not, they'll get KQ, Potter, Sorkin, etc. in by helicopter).

Jason1 - 2 hours ago »
The excuse that bb's "don't carry disease".....so it's NOT high priority, doesn't wash. They are STILL harmful in many other ways. And I am not convinced they can't carry disease, as I don't see why they "couldn't". Just because it hasn't happened yet (that we know of) does not, imo, mean it NEVER will!

I believe they carry secret nanophages designed to manipulate use all at a genetic level to do irrational things and make wild and sweeping generalisations.

This would not be normal behaviour because they tend to feed until full or dislodged and are not known to feed from wounds. You also have the realisation that to be that close you would have to be in the same bed in which case there is a high probability that you carry whatever the other person has.

The bed bug conference was very much the start of the process of awareness and action, yes ideally it should have occurred years ago but the reality of the situation is that people tend not to do these things until it is already out of control. There is now more sharing of information, more media attention on the subject, more government action although not all of it will be fully visible at this stage. Hopefully such an event will become annual and a focus for scientists and field based people to discuss ways to tackling problems. I may even have time to go myself next time. I would certainly like to present some data on the spread within the urban environment and some modelling we have done on high density living situations.

The reality is however that as a problem that has recently resurfaced technology, knowledge and skills will lag behind. The bed bug world is certainly a lot different in 2009 than it was in 2005 and I remember hours spent trying to find information in 2003 when there was little to nothing publicly available. Thankfully through this site and other key resources we have a good framework of information and understanding.

Its is all however not without it's growing pains and the reality is that effective solutions are a lot more complex than what, when, where and how to spray. The reality is that even after over 11,500 cases I am still learning new levels of complexity in infestation dynamics.

We are still learning and will continue to do so for some times to come.

Months of complaints did nothing. But the minute congressmen received those calls, quick and massive legal action was taken. The perps are awaiting trial.

Well, there was a big "bed bug convention" in the USA I heard about, a couple months ago. Not sure what, if anything, came of it. Does anyone know?

Or was it nothing more than a bunch of 3-piece suits who don't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground? That's usually how these things work, lol.

Speaking of Obama.....someone should email the dude to let him know that even HIM, and his family....could get bb's. Yes, even in the White House, sir. Camp David isn't off limits either!

I really hope your right about Obama administration. Something needs to be done about this. BB are out of control I hear people on the train talking about them I see the ads for protect a bed encasements in damn near every train cart during my commute to and from work (I live in NY) even on the street I over hear people talking about they purchased a mattress that had bb etc, at work someone commented to me that she suspects she has them. SIGH. BB are much more common or maybe I'm just becoming aware of this because I've been effected by them personally. It truly is a life changing experience for me. Gosh I thought roaches were bad, I don't even kill them when I see them anymore.

No doubt, sleepless is trolling, but s/he "outed" a sentiment that I've heard more than once..."it's all [name your city/ethnic group/progressive idea]'s fault". Better to debate it in the open, I say. Also, I really do fear that BB's could lead to "urban life" in all it's diversity (and enjoying a recent rebirth), will once again be deprecated. WRT to Obama, I suspect that his admin is a lot more in touch with urban issues than most recent predecessors and is more likely to be willing to roll up their sleeves to solve it.

If DDT wasn't banned, this problem wouldn't exist. Do you think that the Great Socialist Messiah (Obama) is going to stop this pandemic? The only thing the government (your tax dollars) is going to do about this pandemic is have meetings and hand out pamphlets.

Well, he's a lot more likely to than Bush..since Bush hacked away at the CDC and any public health budget. For a Republican government to care, there would need to be a lot more bugs in rich gated communities...

Speaking of Michael Jackson....I was hoping at the very end of the memorial, while the coffin was at the front of the stage....the coffin door begins to open slowly, and a Michael Jackson impersonator pops out and begins to sing, or lip-sink, "Thriller". That would have been so cool. Alot more entertaining than watching that a-hole Al Sharpton. Damn I can't stand that dude!

While DDT is NOT an answer anymore; their is truth to the fact that over regulation of pesticides
and pesticide application by professionals has helped the bed bug suck its way into our homes. In addition due to the risk cup and other regulatory games developing new materials or the like is not as attractive as one might think. Kind of like the development of vaccines for limited diseases.

hmmm DDT was banned in the 70's and bed bugs made a come back 30 years later. I cant immediately see the link but wait a moment ............................................ I have now adjusted my tin foil hat and can see exactly what you mean.

I hate to burst your bubble but bed bugs started the new wave of global colonisation back in late 90's and early 00's long before your current change in politics.

The point above I most agree with from the ones above is Nobugsonme point 4.

If you are looking for a single reason, a single solution then make sure you have a lot of time on your hands because after 7 years and more cases than anyone else can claim I can confirm there are no single reasons and no single solutions.

Four points:

1) A recent study showed 1 in 6 Cincinnati residents had had bed bugs. (There is no comparable study on NYC, but I am not sure you don't have New Yorkers beat.)

2) Cincinnati government is currently not doing a whole lot to fight bed bugs (in part because funding was cut for bed bug inspections by the housing dept.). I don't think you can make a case for Cincy's situation being better because the government is not helping fight bed bugs. Or that things would not be better if they did take effective action.

3) Do your research. Bed bugs started showing resistance to DDT in the late 1940s. More recently, the BBC reported that huts sprayed with DDT for malarial mosquitos in Africa showed increased bed bug activity (in other words, the DDT pissed the bed bugs off but did not kill them).

4) Insulting entire groups of people (New Yorkers, liberals) shows ignorance. It's also pointless.

Friend, this is not about politics ... DDT was banned because it's very dangerous. They were already showing resistance to DDT in the latter part of treatments. Today ... it wouldn’t work any better than products on the market today. Research is key ... not political pointing.

I don't like Obama at all ..... And I don't think trashing ones view is the answer to the fight.
Get educated, stay informed, and make choices based on what you learn and the results from others.

People who hire me .. don't ask me my political views .. They base their choice on results.

If DDT wasn't banned, this problem wouldn't exist. Do you think that the Great Socialist Messiah (Obama) is going to stop this pandemic? The only thing the government (your tax dollars) is going to do about this pandemic is have meetings and hand out pamphlets.

You can thank the tree-hugging, DDT-banning, liberals for this outbreak. I wouldn't care if these bugs were just chewing up New York liberals, but now they are infesting the US heartland too. (The bedbugs, not the liberals, that is. Even though both are filthy bloodsuckers.)
