The stats I've seen bandied about bt bed bug experts (albeit without the data source) is 6% need one treatment, 37% need 1 or 2, and 63% need 3, 4 OR MORE.

I have to agree with Nobugs, even though I wish they **would** give you the final inspection. At the bedbug convention there were statistics from UMASS on how many units needed 1 treatment, how many needed 2, etc. A significant number (I think about 60%) only needed 2 treatments, so with that research to back them up, I don't think you have a case if you are not seeing bedbugs. It's especially tough going against a landlord so unethical he would let you move in, knowing you were moving into an infested building and not tell you. My landlord does that.

Folks here: Beware of moving into ANY multi-unit buidling. Even if you hire a bedbug sniffing dog (which I would do if I were buying a house), you can't have access to test every unit in the building you are moving into. If bedbugs are anywhere in a building, they can find you. My landlord rents the apartments through Craigslist and a super shows them. The super has not been told we have bedbugs and does not live in the building. (The super who lived in the building moved out--maybe because of the bedbugs?) So the new super says, truthfully, if asked "I have not been told anything about bedbugs and haven't heard there are bedbugs in this building." I've put signs up but they are taken down. Beware of renting apartments through Craigslist. My management company used to rent through rental agents, but the rental agents caught on and stopped showing our buidling.

The thing is, if you have some bed bugs, but not many (as I'd expect, if you are not eing bitten or seeing anything), an inspection may not expose anything. The PCO might pronounce you bed bug free, but you would not be. Pronouncing a clean bill of health based on not seeing anything would be pretty meaningless IMHO.

It's possible you are, but unfortunately, I don't think the city would do anything unless you claim you're being bitten or seeing bugs (or other signs, like blood or fecal specks in the sheets). With no bites and no evidence, as far as the city is concerned, you have no bed bug problem.

This is a flaw: the city doesn't know anything about bed bugs, really. They have no protocol except based on seeing evidence.

You all may remember me (or not. lol), but I complained awhile back that my landlord let me move into this building but failed to tell me that it was infested.

He's treated only twice, even though he said there would be 3 treatments. I haven't seen any bugs or had any bites (KNOCK ON WOOD) since April, but from what I've learned lurking here is that they can basically retreat for a couple months. So, I'd like another thorough inspection of the building so that I feel more secure moving into a new space. Has anyone dealth with the city in a situation like this? What are the chances that they would force him to do a final inspection?

I would think that anyone who was confident the building was BB free would want a final inspection...but he obviously realizes a problem and is going to hold out until 1) another bug shows up or 2) i move out (because the other tenants are immigrants and have a history of "not causing any problems").

Any experiences? Advice?

Thanks!
