The problem with Fair Housing, near as I can tell, is the same problem with every other social service agency in California in general and Los Angeles County in particular: they are underfunded and overworked.

Fair Housing should call you back within a few business days. I realized that I needed to talk to them on a Friday, and by the time they called back the Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week, I had already moved into inspection by a PCO and scheduling of treatment.

Since their hotline specifies leaving no information beyond address, phone number, and name--I doubt the usual techniques for making people more likely to provide good service are going to work in terms of getting a call back promptly. You'd need to talk to a live person for that to work, and with Fair Housing in Los Angeles County, even getting to that level is going to take a while.

Some thoughts--
1) If your landlord lives on site, I bet he/she will be sure to get adequate bedbug treatment for the building. 2) If you are not getting a response from Fair Housing, try faxing them. Then you have proof of what and when you sent and you can give more details. You could tell them that you will share with an Internet blog how quickly Fair Housing responds to bedbug inquiries. Maybe that will make them respond quicker?

I tried calling Fair Housing, which is my local tenants' rights organization.

However, the only way to get in touch with them is to call them and leave a message. They will then call you back when they have time.

I had already begun moving forward with treatment at that point. My landlord owns a piece of property with about 6 units on it and lives on site. Rather than fight with the landlord over the technicalities, in the interest of keeping peace with someone I see several times a week, I split the cost of thermal treatment.

I'd be curious to see if you could extract an answer from Fair Housing in a timelier manner than I was able to. Although, to be fair, I don't live in LA city, just LA county, so your laws may be different from mine.

I would look for a LA Tenant's Rights organization for details.

I have been noticing bites on my body for a couple of weeks and thought it was a rash or a mosquito/spider, until this morning when i noticed a small, flat, oval-shaped, light brown bug crawling on top of my sheet. I looked it up online, and obviously it is a bed bug. I am going to be notifying my landlord about this. I was wondering if anyone knew if she is going to be responsible for the extermination. I live in Los Angeles and I am sure I am not the first person to be dealing with this. I have no idea where the bugs may have come from and there are 56 units in my building, I also live in one of the most densly populated areas of the city. Anyone have any ideas on how to move forward?
