Yes, the K9 can be used to screen your contents while still packed in boxes.... All cargo loaded on a cruise ship is checked for explosives by a K9 while it is packed on pallets with plastic wrap before it is loaded on a ship.... You can cut holes in the plastic wrap to create ports for the dog to check, but it isn't required... The scent will be available even if the wrap is still in place.

Not to hijack the thread but a question for Doug:

Independent of my hotel encounter of the gross kind, I'm moving into a new apartment in another month. New construction therefore I assume (hope?) totally bug-free. Is it possible for a dog to inspect my furniture/household goods/personal items before they go into the apartment and are unpacked. That would mean, I guess either sniffing all the boxes/items on the threshold or in the moving van? Would that be effective or would everything have to be unpacked? (furniture was packed for international shipping therefore shrink-wrapped to the nth degree)

Though I'm most concerned about the things I'm bringing back from my travels in my suitcases, since my household goods were shipped from NYC (no experience with bb's there but this forum has me wondering), I figure it wouldn't hurt to check those as well.

It would give me peace of mind but I don't want to throw money away if it's not effective or only providing a false sense of security.

The timing depends on the goal of the inspection.

If you want early detection & identification of the infestation... Then bringing a K9 team in makes sense.... The K9 team can help rule out or confirm the presence of any specimens.

Your alternative is to wait & watch.... You might want to invest in a good cover for your box springs, a BB Alert (David Cain's passive monitor) & a set of Climb-up Interceptors to assist in the collection of a specimen (or hopefully not).... It sounds like you have been doing your research & asking the right questions.

Let us know about the results of the inspection

Actually Simone I'm following your story quite closely because the same thing just happened to me a couple of weeks ago!

I had my run-in with the beasts on a Friday evening (just the one night), started itching Saturday night and woke up with new 'bites' on Monday morning. In total 45 from one night. What I learned from this site is that it can take a while for the bites to manifest themselves, in other words, what you could be seeing are bites from your original exposure. For me it's been about 2 1/2 weeks since my episode and so far, so good. No sightings, no new welts. I feel like I'm just waiting on pins and needles (literally because now I'm hypersensitive to every little itch).

From your posts, I sense that you are taking every precaution and my fingers are crossed that it turns out okay for you.

I am sure no one is following every detail of everyone's posts..but my quick story is: we got bitten in a hotel, I found a dead one squished on me a few mornings later, we got rid of most of our stuff. We've been back since Sunday, and I have two NEW bites since then.

Some people from a PCO are coming tomorrow with a dog to check our apartment and car. Is it too soon?

If there is only one or two bugs, will they have any chance of finding anything? I feel like it's very likley they will find no evidence, and it's very likely I won't believe them :(
