Baking soda is NOT basically salt. Salt is sodium chloride, baking soda is bicarbonate of soda and contains a carbon compound gas with some NaCl. It is known for it's soothing properties on bites and stings such as reducing swelling. What hurts when we apply these things to our wounds is a shock to the raw nerve endings being cauterized. DeathtoallBBs is right.

bait - 20 hours ago »
I understand the aloe vera gel, but baking soda is a bleaching agent, a deodorizer and an antacid. 100% sodium bicarbonate is basically salt, maybe that's why it stings. How is this good for a bite? My dentist has me brushing with it, but I assume it's because it is mildly abrasive and a whitener. (It is absolutely tops for scrubbing the tub.)
Perhaps just the a/v alone would do the trick, and not be pasty white.
If I'm wrong, please correct me.

I have known dentists to tell their patients to rinse with warm salt water when they had a toothache. I believe it's the salt that takes the swelling down and disinfects. Salt is also used when people are sick, hence chicken soup. Although any soup will do, soup usually has a very high content of salt. I could be wrong, but maybe salt helps to dry out the bites that are sometimes filled and swollen and maybe stop infection. The aloe vera makes it smooth and not dry out the skin so much. Sorta like cocoa butter for stretch marks. It's good that it's a paste so it sticks to the bite and does its job. You can't just put salt on a bite for various reasons. And I don't think that aloe vera by itself would work.

We had recently been victims of bed bug infestations and while my daughter's stay-in nanny didn't get any bites, me and my daughter suffered severely. For more than a month I would wake up with big swolen, angry welts all over the body. It looks horrible as they look like bruises on my arms and they leave ugly scars.
I tried everything from over the counter balms to hydrocortisone cream (recommended by my doctor) but what worked for me is a homemade solution consisting of aloe vera gel and baking soda.
It works best if you have just been bitten. Mix three parts of baking soda with one part Aloe vera gel and apply them directly like a paste on the bite. You will fell the bite sting a bit but that would instantly stop the itch. Allow the paste to dry on the bite and peel off on its own.
If you have to go out and dont want to be seen with white patches of solution on your body, you can increase the amount of aloe vera in the mixtture so you have a clear, translucent salve. Since the ingredients are natural you can apply as often as you feel necessary. You will notice that your bites will not swell, itch and will barely leave a scar when they heal.
I used a regular Arm and Hammer baking soda and 100% organic aloe vera gel you can find in health food store.
Good luck and let me know how it goes.
