The Travel FAQs have a section on not bringing bed bugs home (some of which you may still be able to implement) and the Packtite FAQ may be helpful.

Thanks, I'd never heard of this before but I can see how it would give peace of mind. I have travelled a lot in the past, Africa, Middle East, Europe and never any problems with bb's. I guess I was living in a dream world. Just did an insect check before packing to go home and never worried about it. I've stayed in a lot of hotels ... my luck finally ran out I guess. When this is all over (I hope it will be soon because I'm feeling very sleep deprived), I will peruse the forum to find out what I should be doing when I check into a hotel room. And I will purchase one of these gadgets to sterilize my belongings on return.

If you're a big traveler, you should get a Packtite. Expensive as heck, but good for peace of mind. You can put your whole suitcase in to "sterilize" it. Just got mine in the mail today, so hopefully I'll be letting you know how well it's working soon.

Thanks. I did this. The laptop I've had to unseal because it's the only way I can follow this forum :-) but I zip it up when it's not in use. Anyway, I decided today nothing I had was worth risking a home infestation. I threw it all out. I hope it was soon enough.

timetraveller61 - 1 hour ago » Except for the clothes on my back, I packed everything into plastic bags and brought it home, now am off to the laundromat. Since it was just a short weekend trip, I didn't have much with me but am concerned that I not infect my apartment. Should I worry about my laptop, paperwork and soft-sided knapsack and tote? These were sitting on the desk, carpet and/or upholstered chair in the infected room.

Yes, I would be concerned about your laptop, paperwork, and bags. Keep those items sealed in airtight plastic bags until some of the experts on the forum advise you on what to do with them..

So I needed a couple of days away for peace and quiet and to catch up on sleep ... instead I got my first bb experience in a Meridien hotel! First night I saw a small bug on the crisp white sheets and another on the wall near the headboard. Scooped them up in a tissue and though it occurred to me that maybe they were bb's I was exhausted and must have fallen asleep. Nothing unusual occured the following day. Then on night two I was laying on the sheets reading and I noticed another small bug crawling up my shoulder. I flicked it off only to find three others (also very small) on the sheets. I scooped them up in a tissue and started packing up my belongings to move to another room. I saw a bigger one on the folds of the pillowcase. Booted out of there quickly! Only then did I become aware of itchy spots (like mosquito bites) on my fingers. Since then the bites seem to have multiplied, some more on my arms, a few on my torso and at least one on my face. The room they moved me to did not seem to have any bugs but then I didn't really sleep :-(.

Except for the clothes on my back, I packed everything into plastic bags and brought it home, now am off to the laundromat. Since it was just a short weekend trip, I didn't have much with me but am concerned that I not infect my apartment. Should I worry about my laptop, paperwork and soft-sided knapsack and tote? These were sitting on the desk, carpet and/or upholstered chair in the infected room.

Any advice appreciated. I'd like not to become another bb horror story.
