Jason,
I am back to tell you my updates about dealing bbs with this product, It has been 2 months since I sprayed my US version, wow, I can't believe that I haven't bitten sicne then, it is really amazing, It seems it really does a good job for the bbs in my room, I have sprayed it for 4 times in the two months, maybe my room is not in a severe condition of bbs after I threw off my affected mattress, so it could achieve a great success. Thanks for your reply about my question before, and I hope everyone here can be bbs free.

If you care about your 5 kids, do not go hog wild overapplying this stuff around your house. Never, ever, ever, forget that what you are spraying is poison!
Glad to hear it inflicted BB causalities but do not overexpose your family by applying off the label.
Don't be "the most ignorant person in the world" and poison your family. People have done that.
The thread is not closed and the ideas were not censored. They're still there.
You have to understand that if people want to express their ideas, they have to respect others on the forum and the forum rules. It's a shame these two posters did not, and they are gone because of it.

The only reason I remain on this site is so that I can continue to help others, as I have been doing. No other reason for me to stay, since I am now 100% bb free. Which of course is the last thing certain people want to hear, which are again, reasons i've mentioned previously. But it's FACT.....and I really don't give a damn if less than a handfull of people with obvious agenda's....like it or not. If I get banned for stating the truth, that say's it all. And if I do.....at least I was able to help several people while I was here, explaining my self-treatment.
It's funny, you were called a "cheer leader" for simply saying you appreciate what i've done, in bringing my story here to this board and trying to help people.....for which i've succeeded in doing. Yet I see certain pco's also have "cheer leaders". Oh, I forgot, that's "different" ;) I don't have an ad running on this site....nuff said!

Hey jason1,

Which of the PCOs posting here with a following has an ad running on the site?

I can think of only one and it is not someone I have seen responding to you. If KillerQueen does, I have not seen it.

Now, let me be 100% clear:

I have been very patient with the both of you and your "obvious agenda" of promoting self-treatment with a chemical not legally approved for bed bug treatment, and your insistence on giving others advice (directly or indirectly) about how and how often to use pesticides when you are not qualified to do so. You have done all of this without regard for advice from those who know more than you about pesticides and bed bugs that this can be hazardous both in terms of danger to humans and also in terms of potentially making bed bug problems worse or making them spread.

Many people have complained off-thread I have been too patient with both of you. (And here's a tip: not one of them was a PCO!)

You have been asked by me previously to address your concerns about the site to me directly, and not -- instead -- to discuss myself and others passive-aggressively in the third person on forum theads (something I have not been doing to you, I note).

In case it escapes you completely -- because you, Jason1 and DragonFlight, have both repeatedly shown yourselves nearly incapable of reading carefully what others have to say -- it is okay to cheerlead about some things.

But rah-rah posts in response to everything posted on a thread which has drawn wide critical concern (for good reason) from a wide variety of pest professionals and former bed bug sufferers who demonstrate much wider knowledge of bed bugs and their treatment than you do -- this is not worthy of cheers.

I have a right to say so and I say it directly to the people who need to hear it.

Others, like myself, who are not PCOs and who do understand why self-treatment can be a bad idea were respectful of your views, if critical.

You have shown no respect for ours. Your repeated argument that "of course people here are against PCOs because they're making money off of us" is a fallacious one. You miss the point. Do you know that PCOs here regularly assist people in areas far from them? They are here to help. Many of them do so even though they could more easily gather up clients in other ways. Some of them post here without revealing their identity.

And besides that, most of the people here who are telling you that self-treatment can be dangerous are bedbuggers who have beaten their bed bug problems and who have gathered much more experience with bed bugs than either of you (both personal and secondhand). These folks gain nothing from promoting the use of experienced, knowledgeable PCOs (nor from posting to the forums in the first place, for that matter).

So, let's be clear: you are not being banned for describing your own self-treatment.

You are both being banned for being hugely annoying, not just to me but to many others.

You are being banned for not respecting the rules of the site after repeated warnings.

DragonFlight - 3 hours ago »

DragonFlight,
You are not qualified to recommend that others do their own bed bug treatment with pesticides. And this is not the purpose of the site.

(rest of nobugs' entire post removed from quote)

First, please do not quote entire posts. The purpose of the quote function is to quote brief snippets, not the other person's entire post, as you did. I have removed it. (I have repeatedly warned jason1 about this in this thread, but apparently, DragonFlight, you don't read very carefully.)

There are dangers too, not doing nothing either.

"Not doing nothing" is clearly a problem.

Many are not going to have Killer Queen in there area, so they are going to call there regular PCO, which most of the time does not eliminate the problem, and if it's a small infestation that self-treatment could solve, spending hundreds if not thousands is not the route many probably want to go. Then to add insult to injury finding out after three or more visits or a few months have passed they still have bed bugs that is a slap in the face.

I am not sure why you are referencing forum user Killer Queen. He is only one of a number of bed bug professionals and experienced bedbuggers who have suggested the methods in this thread are not a good idea.

What kind of data are you working from that tells you "most of the time" PCOs do not solve the problem?

From what people tell us, it seems the majority of people on Bedbugger who have bed bugs and get rid of them use PCOs. A minority of our users are in NYC. (And FWIW it appears most of these do not use KillerQueen.)

It's common sense to protect animals and the like, but I nor others can hold peoples hand if they neglect how they are applying these chemicals and someone or something gets ill, that is on there head.

DragonFlight, you are responsible for what you say on an internet forum. And I am asking you not to encourage people to self-treat (in general or with a specific product) because you are not qualified to give such advice. And because you don't want to be responsible for the consequences.

PCOs who are qualified to apply pesticides generally are wise enough not to give such advice to strangers on a public forum. I have only had to ask one person here who claimed to be a PCO not to do so.

If someone did want advice on self-treatment, they should not take it from unknown random strangers posting on an internet forum. I would send them to a reputable source. You, DragonFlight, are not one. (Note, I also tell people I am not qualified to advise on how to do self-treatment.)

I would commend to anyone the latest (3rd) Edition of the Bed Bug Code of Practice, written by Australian entomologist Stephen L. Doggett (this and the previous draft included input from bed bug experts around the world). You can download it free here, and it's linked from the "resources" tab above.

It gives information on identification and treatment. However, it does not go into detail on how to safely and effectively apply substances. Presumably because in most cases, this is something that a licensed professional will probably be able to do more safely and more effectively than you will. (For one thing, they should not overapply pesticides, as several of you describe doing above.)

I say that PCOs will probably be able to do a better job, even if they are not Killer Queen, David Cain, EffeCi, Jeff White, Winston O'Buggy, Sean Rollo or any of our other knowledgeable resident professional bed bug experts. (My apologies to those pros who are forum regulars who I have not named just now.)

That is not to say every PCO is equally skilled at treating bed bugs. (We have a FAQ to help you choose a good one, for this reason.) Some are great, many are probably just fine, and some, I'm sure, are clueless.

But IMHO even a second-rate PCO has a lot more knowledge and experience of treating bed bugs safely and effectively than you.

I will not further justify the policy on you not giving advice on treating with pesticides. Period. You can say what you did to treat your bed bugs, but you cannot encourage others to self-treat with pesticides, nor can you tell them how to treat with pesticides.

DragonFlight,

You are not qualified to recommend that others do their own bed bug treatment with pesticides. And this is not the purpose of the site.
(rest of nobugs' entire post removed from quote)

There are dangers too, not doing nothing either.

How many threads have I read on this forum, where people have them return ? Just as equal to how many think they have bed bugs but don't. Why are they returning ? Do they know someone who has them ? Do they live beside someone who they are unaware has them ? Are they bringing them back them-self ? Then the cycle repeats, calling the PCO and spending the money, why do you think most throw out there stuff especially after spending in the range up to $2K, because there fed up and now there back and they have to spend more money. Killer Queen is one person. North America is a huge continent with millions of people that may never get a Killer Queen in there area and besides if they have a small number why even call whoever do it yourself. This has been brought up before in the past few hundred messages in this thread, at one point everyone agrees then, some common regulars on this forum jump back on the PCO bandwagon. If you can do it yourself, why not ? It's common sense to protect animals and the like, but I nor others can hold peoples hand if they neglect how they are applying these chemicals and someone or something gets ill, that is on there head.

As an aside, it is fine to talk about caulking methods, but experts tell us the home should be properly treated before you caulk. Spraying an off-label pesticide which may have repellent qualities before caulking is a good idea. I would recommend people who want to caulk get their information on it from a reputable source.

DragonFlight - 3 hours ago »
Third for a major infestation as in the case you had, I also recommend that they go to a PCO. For anything less I suggest the do-it-yourself approach.

DragonFlight,

You are not qualified to recommend that others do their own bed bug treatment with pesticides. And this is not the purpose of the site.

It is fine to describe what you did, off-label as it may be, but you cannot prescribe treatments for others. People may endanger themselves or their property. Professionals have been asked not to do this, and amateurs certainly should not be doing it.

There are dangers involved with self-treatment, and each individual must do their own research and decide for themselves if they have the knowledge and skill set to do this. It's not for most people. Not only can you harm yourself or your family (or pets), you can also make bed bug problems worse. Mismanaged bed bug problems may spread in your home or to others, which may even cause you legal or financial problems, depending on your situation.

This is an official administrative warning.

Do not give others advice about self-treatment with pesticides. You simply are not qualified.
Do not encourage others to self-treat with pesticides.

To clarify that:

You may stick to describing what you did, or asking others what they did.
You may not be a rah-rah cheerleader, encouraging others to copy Jason's methods (or yours or anyone else's) as you have done repeatedly here.

I am stating this publicly as it applies to everyone.

If you ignore these rules, you may be banned at admin's discretion.

First off I want to mention that Killer Queen although probably good at what he does, is running a business.

Killer Queen those people who had Bed bugs crawling everywhere did they tell you what product they were using in which it was causing them to hide ? Third for a major infestation as in the case you had, I also recommend that they go to a PCO. For anything less I suggest the do-it-yourself approach. You're over looking Killer Queen, you may get phone calls and it's helping your business and the results are positive, but what is the financial cost that those have to contend with after your last visit and the bed bugs are gone ?

Now they have a new problem, a financial problem out of one mess and into a new mess, now instead of not sleeping from bed bugs there not sleeping cause they have to pay off a debt. Telling those that are using the Ortho method that there out of there minds is not the appropriate thing to say, if these people are having success then instead of going off on a tangent, you should simple be praising them and hope it works out in the end, instead you give a back handed comment.

Those that continue to see bed bugs may want to check any holes that are linking you to other apartments, and there can be many. I've stressed this you cannot eliminate them on your own if they keep coming though from someone else, that means you have to check and caulk and/ or foam:

Kitchen
Bathroom
Living Room Holes
Checking Radiator holes (lifting up Rad cover if any exist)
Bed Rooms

Any place where you are joined with someone else, or if there coming from above the same holds true, buildings won't renovate your apartment when you first move in and bug proof it , they should but landlords are cheap. You have to spend the money and do it yourself then if your infestation is small you can probably eliminate it.

That is what Jason did, he is smart, why do you think he can get on with his life at this point ? From contemplating what method to take, or what PCO buster he should call ? NO he acted fast so he could be on ontop of the Bed bugs and stay ontop of them.

I've wrote numerous warning signs and methods some common sense that others have written but if you don't take simple measures you can spray Ortho until you become the Mascot, and bed bugs will still come though. You have to block off access points, so you can focus on what is within your home. If you live in a house you have nothing to block off, you just have to focus on what's in your house and eliminate it, or maybe it's your friend who you keep inviting or relative that has them that keeps bringing them over, in which case someone like Killer Queen won't bat an eye and come over and do his magic which he probably is good at.

Unless you got a good stash of cash you'll end up with no more bites, just a financial bite.

This is all new for us. A couple of months ago we saw a single trail of something dark and gross on our bed skirt. I did some research and thought it might be bedbugs. When I did a thorough investigation of the bed and wooden bed frame, we found several dead brown bugs about 2-4mm in size on the wooden frame. The dead bugs have no legs that I can see. We found nothing at all on the mattress or anywhere else. The only excrement was the original single trail of yuck that I saw. I have never seen anything alive. I sometimes get these itchy tiny hard blisters on my hands. Does this sound like bedbugs to those of you who have battled them?

Hello,
I am sorry I didn't update yesterday. Two nights, both with the bites. But I am not giving up because the amount of bites is less and less everyday. I keep spraying, steaming and vaccuming and hopefully one day they will all die :(

Glad to hear the bites are decreasing.

How about "chaulking"? Have you considered it, or done any? I did quite a bit of chaulking with my bb infestation.

Like I said I have them for a few months now. I also had bb two years ago in the app I just moved into (at that time after unsuccessful afforts of landlord and exterminator we moved out). Just because I did not join the website earlier it doesn't mean I haven't actively read it. On my own I used exterminator( I know it's not correct name), bunch of 100% guarantee sprays and powders, and I threw out bed. I also washed, vacummed and bagged all my cloths. I even bought a hand steamer. Nothing works.

Hi petlady,

Thanks for your response.

I am sorry you are going through this. We know all pest control firms are not the same. Sometimes there are issues also when you get someone to treat but attached neighbors are infested (not sure if this is the situation there).

I would encourage anyone seeking a PCO to interview a number of people and ask about their methods. (We have a faq on choosing a PCO here.) Thermal is pricier than spray treatments in many cases. And even thermal prices may vary.

I would urge extreme caution and do not approve of much of what is suggested in this thread, but I do hope your problem is gone soon.

Never spray your bed or couch just follow directions on bottle an no where else!!

FYI, since the product is not approved or listed for use for bed bugs, no one using ORTHO is "following the directions on the bottle."

That's good you're finding dead bugs. Have you seen any "live" ones the last few days?

One today, but not an adult. I don't know how to call it but was transparent and I sprayed Ortho on it and it died right away and turned up-side-down with leggs up. No popping though:)

Jason do you remeber when, in this topic, someone was saying how they hear popping. Thisis the third time I hear popping in the places that I sprayed. WOuld that be a noice of those little b@stards dying? I hope so!

I've never heard a "popping" sound myself, but I did read about it from someone on this thread, and perhaps elsewhere too, can't recall exactly. I think I would be creeped out if I heard that, kinda spooky, lol. But if it's the sound of bb "death", well, I could quickly get used to it ;)

I didn't spray around bed yesterday because my boyfriend cleaned, bleached and sprayed all house before I came home. He found, behind he furniture, in all house, about 8 bbs in different staged. All dead, all fed :( My guess is that they die with the contact with Ortho after the meal. Jason what time a day you sprayed your house and how is the situation in your house now?

When I sprayed the ring of death around my bed, it was usually early evening. Cracks/crevices, under countertops, etc, I sprayed during the day.

He found, behind he furniture, in all house, about 8 bbs in different staged. All dead, all fed :( My guess is that they die with the contact with Ortho after the meal. Anyways, today (without the ring around the bed, but everywhere else) no major bites. You can call me crazy but I circled all bites with maker onmy body so I know for sure which ones are new. Usually I can see the bites the same day.In the morning just as red rush, then it concetrates around one spot that changes to red pimple by the end of the day. My skin is really very white and I can usually say if I was bitten by young or adult bb. It looks and develops differently.
As of my daily report. I stayed in bed until 10 o'clock today (i Know I took a risk but I was really tired) and like I said no major bites. HOwever my plan for today is laundry and than steaming the wholle house with my hand steamer! and spraying of course. Jason what time a day you sprayed your house and how is the situation in your house now?

I wonder if they're new bb bites, or delayed? Like I said before, it can take several day's for new bites to appear on people. Everyone is different. Some people get them right away, some don't.

Have you tried non-thermal pco's also? It may be less $$$. Then again, it may be more....but I would definately weigh all options first.

Sadly I found more bites on my leg and the pco gave me a price for therm - $ 2500 :(

Daily update :

Few little bites on my hands. That's what I see so far. I left early to work so I couldn't examine the rest of the body carefully. So far looks it's only on my hands (2 bites). I don't know how those little b@stards are getting to me. wrrrrrrr.......

To watkinsnewan:

Clothes are in baggs and I am streaming my bed every second day. After spraying I open windows and doors and leave the house.

This is really my last try before I'll get the whole house steamed, especially that my smart boyfriend just bought the puppy and I really don't want to harm this little baby :(

I know this post was chaotic. Sorry for that. It's hard to write about bb habits when shopping with grandma :)

Not a problem, your post was easilly readable.

These new bites may be left over from the old ones. Sometimes bites won't show up for several days after one has been bitten. It's really hard to say. They could also be new bites. For myself, once I started spraying....my bites pretty much imediately ended. But as i've said several times in this thread....results are not going to be the same for everyone. Similar results as mine have been reported on this thread, though.

By the way, you mentioned sleeping on the floor. Can you move your bed to another location in the room? That's one thing I did. Not sure of the difference it made, if any, but I did it anyway.

Hello Jason,
First I want to say that I do not understand why people are always looking for someting to pick up on. You are just trying to help and I am sure you did.
...
Anyways, I bought Ortho and sprayed around the house today and I hope it will work.
I will keep you updated.

No offense, but I don't understand why people would join a website about bed bugs, and within one hourof joining the website, post that they had run out and followed the first piece of advice they read

That's what it looks like, anyway.

No offense taken.
At this point I am desperate because I cannot live like that any more :(

For my daily report I have to sadly admit I do have a few new bites. However, they are not big. Bb in all stages need blood to grow so even small bugs bite. My skin is very pale and I can see the smallest bites. So after applying I don't have any major bites but my skin is read in at least two places. Maybe I didn't spray enough, maybe because I sleep in the floor:/ Anyways I will keep trying and I let you know tomorrow. Another thing is that my boyfriend has no bites at all so he hardly believed me until he saw one.

Hello Jason,
First I want to say that I do not understand why people are always looking for someting to pick up on. You are just trying to help and I am sure you did.
Secondly, I myslef have a bb issue that started in mid June. For about 2 months there was nothing and then it snowballed and since then I have bites every night. I moved out to my boyfriend house and some how brough bb with me. I dont know how I got the in the first place. Roomates, friends, people in the building? Who knows?
Anyways, I bought Ortho and sprayed around the house today and I hope it will work.
I will keep you updated.

Ah well, you know, can't please everyone, lol.

When I first began posting, the negative comments regarding what I was doing somewhat buged me (no pun intended) but now I really couldn't care in the slightest....not with the success myself and others have had, and continuing to have.

But hey, it's good to get both sides. Some of the negative comments are legitimate concerns. Not all of them are angry and baseless, and/or from grumpy pco's worried they are losing potential customers to self-treatment.

A big part of the problem with the negative side.....and this has been brought up by myself and others, is that all they can see is the "spraying". They didn't bother to read about the other steps I tooke, like the chaulking, etc. Yes, Ortho was the catalyst, I have no doubt about that.....but the other things I did were a big help, for which I have no doubt aboout either.

After all the talk and back and forth.....the bottom line is this, i've been completely and 100% bb free (sightings and bites) for well over 4 months now, almost 5.

Except for spraying "every day" like I did at the beginning of self-treatment, I would not have changed a thing, nothing. The reason I would not have sprayed every day like I did....is because it doesn't look as if I had to. Also, their could be health concerns with spraying so often, at least with the USA version of the product.

Sorry to hear about your bb problem. And yes, please do keep us updated.

Good luck!

OK I confess I don't have the time nor energy to wade through all 5 pages of post again but my only addition is a note of caution.

I have seen an increase in the number of cases of people with advanced pesticide poisoning in the UK many of whom started their journeys on the path of self treatment. One that springs to mind I sensibly refused to treat because I saw no fresh sign of bed bug activity. The person had bite like symptoms, itching symptoms and could feel their skin crawl.

I was concerned enough to remove some of the floor board for HPLC analysis and was shocked at a long list of chemicals that had been used. The net effect of which was to create a toxic soup in the room which was producing the bites, itches and crawling sensations.

Just because you can pull the trigger spray easily does not mean you should be doing so every day. Just like cleaning too much can be bad for you and can effect the time it takes to eradicate bed bugs.

Please always read the label and do your homework.

I never really wrote in this thread because I can’t stand typing about nonsense like this. Each time I see the topic of this thread I think of the father from My Big Fat Greek Wedding (with his trusted bottle of Fantastic).

I think this thread has gone on long enough but a few facts are missing.

Fact: Hot water will kill bed bugs & end an infestation.
Fact: A shoe will kill bed bugs & end an infestation.
Fact: A blow torch will kill bed bugs & end an infestation.
Fact: Scotch tape will kill bed bugs & end an infestation.
Fact: Fantastic will kill bed bugs & end an infestation.
Fact: yada yada yada … etc. etc. etc!!!!

The point is you can throw a bed out in some infestations and solve the problem or buy something over the counter and use it according to the label and solve the problem. Each bed bug case is different and not everything will work for everyone. To keep this thread open/going is a JOKE! The person who wrote the thread did not find the cure for Polio. He got lucky solving a simple bed bug infestation.

I can’t tell you how many times as a PROFESSIONAL I see cases worse off because of store bought products used incorrectly. 3 months ago I was hired to treat a 2 family home that had bed bugs for over a year (14 months if memory serves me correct) with multiple treatments by another professional; the problem was not solved. The treatments failed because the adjoining house had a problem that was not known by anyone but the occupant of that 3 bedroom space next door.
The landlord who lived below this tenant was never told anything and never saw a bug in her home.

After I realized this was a migration issue I insisted I get access to the house next door. The home next door to my original client had bed bugs for at least 18 months. Not a very long inspection!
There was not 1 room in the house that didn’t have bed bugs. They were on the ceiling of the dining room, you couldn’t look more then 4 inches along the carpet without seeing a bug, and every piece of furniture had bugs in it. Inside door frame molding, sitting right on window sills exposed, pictures, TV stands, you name it … there were bugs everywhere!!

Point of the story, he to (the tenant that told nobody) was spraying product he bought and caused the bugs to migrate to 2 other apartments next door. Plus the fact that he made his own problem worse because the bugs would move away from suitable harborage to escape his spray and pray product. This guy caused people thousands of dollars, countless sleepless nights, and God only knows how much stress and anxiety.

This thread is kept alive by pointless posts of dribble from people also clueless about pesticides or bed bug biology. It’s as if a few are trying to ensure this thread stays alive & why I don’t know. But one thing is true, my phone rings 20 times a day because people research the web and find the biggest mistake they can do is try and treat bed bugs themselves.

If anyone wants to self treat I’ll lend out my 223 rifle and you can take aim in your home. I would bank on better results than a product that claims a 12 month residual.

YOU GOT LUCKY (FANTASTIC) …… NOTHING MORE!

Jim so is the ORTHO a residual killer on top of contact killer for BB!! Because I thought it was just a contact killer and repelled them!!

Anything that says it last for X months is a form of residual. Many products that have residual killing ability will kill on contact also.

If anything says last for X months, you apply it per the label and leave it alone. If pest activity returns quickly, consider other options.

Watkins, please, please do not spray your room or your children's room anymore. Please go back to the beginning of this thread and read the warnings about spraying this chemical. Yes it works on bed bugs. But you do not want to risk you or your children's health to kill the bugs.

I've posted the thread again in a new subject, it is a important FYI that I think everyone should read because most think of the common ways they can pick up bed bugs but over look the uncommon ways and that FYI opens the doors to the possibilities because I believe if a roach can hide there then so can a bed bug.

To a extent you have relate bed bugs, roaches and lice as having similar common ways of getting around. Roaches can get in your bed, I've had this encounter once at a place I lived at a long time ago but the difference is they won't bite you for blood they just will run aimlessly. On the other hand Lice and Bed Bugs need blood and both will hide in clothes, beds, pillows, sofas, baseball caps, you name it. When you're at the store don't try on a article of clothing your best recommendation is to buy it, wash it, try it on keep the receipt and if it doesn't fit, return it. It's work that is true, but you'll save yourself more grief in the end then becoming Inspector gadget if you go the self-treatment method, or money if your insistent on a PCO.

There has been numerous articles written in the 30's and 40's on bed bugs, as lot of todays seniors did live with them or had to deal with them during one of the first two World Wars, they had to do practices so once they had eliminated them, they wouldn't return. As a society we have abandoned all these practices. In the past decade bed bugs have returned with a vengeance, we can learn from past mistakes until a solid, safe solution is amongst us which at the rate, levels of governments are going could be a very long time so our only solution is to adopt the practices of the past into our lives of today.

The Ortho product, has not been tested with bed bugs, and Ortho has responded to a few members here who have written Ortho on the "Home Defense Max" product, but the miracle comes in that it does work on bed bugs, that is what Jason has to be given a big thank you for, because neither I or many others would have walked into a store and randomly picked up this product. Bed bugs don't realize it's there, therefore they won't hide from it, instead they cross it and only after realizing what they've done it's too late and they die, the main ingredient in the Canadian version of Ortho is based from a flower, you read right, a earth grown flower. This flower has an extract that not only do bed bugs but other bugs hate, which is why they won't go on the flower, destroying someones beautiful array of flowers just by spraying this natural chemical. How long before bed bugs get immune to this chemical is unknown, but we can only hope they never get immune to it.

Thanx.

Jim so is the ORTHO a residual killer on top of contact killer for BB!! Because I thought it was just a contact killer and repelled them!! Deeper into my home! I also have been wiping the stuff off before I spray more with MrClean W/febreze then I let dry over night then spray the next morning! Sorry I forgot to mention that just to much I am doing to put in words! !those are just the basics things I am doing! The only cheering I will be doing is at the kids games and when I get rid of these d** bugs!! I am just thankful I did not in fact pick up a bottle of alcohol instead I got in to my car drove to nearest WALMART and picked up a bottle of ORTHO instead you forget these things drive people to insanity and suicide and in my case almost drove me to drink!!now I will in 6 nonths be able to say 10 sober!!

My room gets it every two days!! Kids room Ever 4 days!! I haven’t been spraying much of the rest of the house Kids bathroom, kitchen, living room and dinning room and laundry room twice!!

All the rah rah Jason cheerleaders won't care but you are putting down a substance that is highly diluted to .05%, the carrier evaporates leaving a residue that is toxic to insects for 12 months.

So you reapply it 2-4 days later, that carrier evaporates, leaving more residue, and has now doubled the amount of toxic material on that surface! The first application hasn't broken down. You do it again and again and again and again and you magnify the concentration of pesticide over and over. Increasing the risk in magnitudes.

Nobody following Jason's methods seem to give a damn about this but it is fact.

You are free to poison your home by over application or misapplication going against the makers label but don't say people haven't warned you.

Jason will come back and say I'm am against self treating blah blah blah but I'm not.

I am against any treatment that endangers human health, be it done by a hack PCO or a self treater.

I have only seen one!! Today in the laundry room !!an I don’t know how many I have vacuumed or moped up but I have not seen one in my kids or my room crawling around in the middle of the night like taken care of a baby I wake up at 11, 1, an 3 to check with out the alarm I have no clue why I am waking up like that but I go right back to sleep !!Don’t remember how long I have been spraying but My room gets it every two days!! Kids room Ever 4 days!! I haven’t been spraying much of the rest of the house Kids bathroom, kitchen, living room and dinning room and laundry room twice!! aired out each and every time!! I sprayed the outside of the house twice! with the outdoor!! Hepa filters in the kids room I had pre BB Just to be safe I am wearing gloves and wrapping the bottle in a old towel while I spray not to get any on the important stuff like Beds and clothes!! then I throw it away!

Bugsy, it was not my intent to imply that individuals with PCO treatment had little success. I was happy to hear that one person had success after treatment. Perhaps I should have used a period instead of a semicolon. That was the end of that thought; my next one being I personally cannot afford professional treatment, thermal, chemical, or otherwise.

I can't believe the English major is about to analyze something statistical, but I feel like I have to since no one else has said it. It should be noted that to get to the most recent page of this thread, most people have to view a minimum of two pages of it. The link will take you to page one 1st, and then you have to click on page 5 to get to the most recent discussion. Even without purposeful totally artificial view inflation (i.e. someone repeatedly hitting refresh to inflate number of views), that skews the numbers on how many views this thread receives since each actual view will register as a minimum of two. For people who are going back and reading multiple pages, the numbers are even higher.

And when the English major is pointing out something about statistics, I would think that would be fairly convincing proof that that statistical fact in question should be obvious to everyone--English majors generally not being known for our mathematical prowess and all.

Of course, I don't evaluate threads by number of views anyway. I also know a little something about marketing, so I expect that the title of the thread is probably a pretty big draw. Had I entitled my thread on thermal as "Finally--Relief From Bed Bugs in One Treatment!" that thread would probably get a lot of hits too. Being a student of language and rhetoric, such a title struck me as not especially informative and veering towards the selling snake oil tone that tends to weaken the ethos of the writer. Since I take author credibility very seriously (occupational hazard), I thought I would have more credibility if my posts didn't sound like the snake oil fixes that so often get shopped around on the internet. Even if a strategy is legit, marketing it in a way that makes it sound like a non-legit one didn't seem like a good plan to me personally.

However, it's also worth noting that I was always the kid in school who resented the awards given for perfect attendance because even in elementary school I grasped the difference between quantity and quality, so I'm probably not to be trusted.

BBonme,
There are also plenty of people in the world who are bed bug free after successful chemical treatment from a PCO.

I know that thermal's upfront cost puts it out of the reach of many, many people. The only reasons that I was able to afford thermal were that one, my landlord split the cost with me; two, it happened in a school year that I'd had more work than usual, so I had some savings set aside (unlike this year); and three, I was able to borrow some money from my family to cover what I had already laid out from those savings for other bed bug expenses. I have always been crystal clear that in another year, I would have been unable to afford thermal. That's one reason that I advocate now for more research into a wider variety of chemical pesticides; I know that not only can everyone not afford the upfront expense of thermal, but I also know that I'm lucky in that my landlord owns only a few units and lives on the property. That makes my landlord see tenants as more than sources of income which means a much greater chance of listening to what we have to say.

Not everyone is going to be in that position. Even tenants who can afford thermal may not have landlord who are willing to work with them.

Thermal is a great treatment option, and I wish it were more widely available. Part of that is personal: I already had insomnia before the bed bugs, so the thought of having to be bait would have sent me completely around the bend. Part of that is practical: I believe that bed bugs will adapt like any other pest, so relying on any one chemical pesticide is a bad strategy in the long run. In the medical world, treating antibiotics that way created an awful lot of drug resistant bacteria. Having a variety of treatment options available will help all of us in the long run.

However, it's also important to note that plenty of people do get relief from bed bugs with chemical treatment from a PCO without spending a fortune on it either. It's all about finding a good PCO. Yes, that takes work, and a lot of critical thinking and evaluation skills, but it's a good investment because what you're paying for is someone else's expertise.

I do understand that in some cases, people live in places where finding a good PCO is impossible. In that case, self-treatment, when done safely and with a lot of advance research, may be the only option.

But it wouldn't be my first choice knowing what I know now precisely because I know the limits of my own intelligence and experience.

I understand what you're trying to say, I just don't agree with it, and you don't agree with me. What are ya gonna do? lol, it is what it is!

Anyway, i'm off to LA early tomorrow AM for 3 day's over the long-weekend. By the way, what is the holiday in the USA? Here in Canada it's Thanksgiving on Monday.

Jason,
Self-treatment can work.
I'm not anti-self-treatment, when people do their due diligence with research.
People who self-treat need to go to primary sources from entomologists and universities and research what to do. If they're going to do it, do it right. You CANNOT casually pick up this info by reading random posts on an internet message board.
I think you have difficulty grasping some basic concepts about bedbugs and how to properly use the quote function. If someone thinks your unproven and ill-informed assertions should not be accepted uncritically, then that doesn't mean they're angry at you. Just means they think people should be warned about the flaws on which you base your statements.
And doing what little I can to help others refrain from screwing themselves over in the long run by following bad advice is something I am passionate about. Sorry if I offended with the F-word. My intent was to communicate strongly.

I, for one, am grateful. Grateful for the site and grateful for the thread. Yes there are a lot of posts to get through but it is well worth it. Jason1 I'm glad you hang around to keep us informed of your progress which is starting to sound like victory IMO. For a person on a very tight budget, the knowledge of knowing I could self treat and have some sort of impact meant the world to me when I was in my level of deepest despair. Before I found this particular thread I wanted to just leave my house and all its belongings and hope that some friend/family member would take me and the dog in because a lot of the other posts made it seem like something insurmountable. Fast forward 103 days and I'm no longer waking up to bed bug bites, no longer coating my face, arms and neck with vaseline before going to bed at night.

Of course I also followed steps outlined in the FAQs, like laundering and bagging all of my clothes, encasing my mattress and box spring, moving my bed away from the wall, removed all pictures, etc from wall, removed curtains and (attempted to) caulk openings (I'm sure I missed most of them).

The info about over spraying was heeded and Jason1 himself admitted that he thought he may have done it a little more than he should have.

Nobugs, without this site I would have felt completely isolated and alone in my fight. Bugsyinsocal, your answers to my questions early on were comforting and offered some hope in regards to PCO treatment, knowing that at least one person was bb free after their treatment; but again my purse strings and living situation do not allow for the thermal treatment that you received. Though I realize the Ortho may not work forever...and I'm sure I will have to revisit the problem some time in the future considering the fact that I live in a townhome with the only thing separating me from my neighbor being a fire wall. But for now, the ortho has offered a solution to my problem and has been responsible for many, many restful nights.

Persona, I think your post was very relevant; it is quite possible that readers of this thread are skipping the other things that Jason1 did and going straight for the Ortho. That is definitely a BIG mistake.

Spideyjg, your research, especially on the whole DE issue back in the beginning was most helpful and prevented me from DEing my place as if I was preparing for a fish fry.

Dragonflight, you are like Jason1's security guard and I am very thankful that you encouraged Jason1 to stick around and report on progress.

In other words....can't we all just get along. We're all fighting a common enemy -- BedBugs, let's not fight with each other too.

Persona,

Perhaps you need to re-read my posts, I never said I had a "massive" infestation, or that bb's were running rampant on my balcony. Nor have I EVER said Ortho Home Defence Max was the silver bullet, in fact, i've consistantly said NOTHING is, including this product im using.

Jason,

This why I'm suspicious of your situation. You describe it as a "medium" infestation. Your subjective view - your choice of that adjective - has me shaking my head. The fact that you would characterize an infestation as yours as "medium" is one of the reasons I'm extremely wary of your take on things.

Your own description involves seeing MULTIPLE bedbugs in every room of your home, roaming OUT in the OPEN - even on the balcony. The balcony. That is bananas! If they were on your balcony, then I'd be shocked if the infestation hadn't spread to more neighbors. Also, the bedbugs have been in your home for over year - probably more.

I would quote your some of your vivid descriptions of how you were besieged and attacked by these bugs, but that would send this post into spam.

By certain standards - like David Cain's scale for rating the severity of bedbug infestations - your description of your infestation would grade it on the upper reaches of his 1-10 scale.

I have not seen a SINGLE BUG, not ONE, in over 4 months, simple as that. This is after seeing bugs pretty much every single day for almost a year. Don't tell me "so what", that's ridiculous. The fact of the matter I am now bed bug free, and only spraying twice per month.....soon to be once a month, then not at all.

Take a look around the forums and FAQ and see how difficult they are to find. I was being bitten by bedbugs for at least three months before I saw a single bedbug. Dealing with a once-massive infestation like yours and then not seeing bedbugs walking out in the open does not mean they've been eradicated. For whatever reason, you just don't get it. You don't understand this basic concept of stealthy bedbug behavior. Another reason (among many) that I have real concerns about your take on things.

Look, I'm glad you found some relief, and the problem seems to have abated significantly. But you're holding court in here and dispensing some frankly fucked-up advice. People should be warned before they make a decision.

I hate to break this little tidbit of news to you....but bb's often come back after the pco's are done, also. "SO WHAT" to this also? didn't think so. The difference is....it's not costing me thousands of dollars IF bb's do come back. And I don't think they will....but it's yet to be determined.

Also, since you did not read my posts, obviously, I said clearly....I DO have a bad reaction to bb bites. For some reason, you said I don't. Please get your facts straight. I'm not mad, it's just that you have made many errors in your posting.

By the way, if you think it's only myself seeing excellent results with this product, you havn't read the thread very closely, or seen my pm's from others thanking me over and over for my help.

I'm bb free now, so the only reason I hang around here is so I can help others by sharing my success. For me, that is even more important than the success iv'e achieved!

There is a reason why this thread has 10,000 views....it's not smoke and mirrors either, lol.

Ditto what spideyjg said.

I will just add this. The boards here are not public space, which is where freedom of speech applies. Private institutions do not guarantee freedom of speech. Private institution get to set whatever rules they want. This is why protests on, for example, church grounds or outside specific stores are often broken up--since freedom of speech and assembly are only fully protected (aside from exceptions like imminent threat and national security) in public spaces.

If a person doesn't like the rules in a particular forum, of course, he or she can always start his or her own community and set the rules as he or she desires.

If you decide to repost that info to another thread, I would consider adding information on hotels and other travel. I didn't get my bed bugs from any of the sources you listed. (I didn't post this suggestion before because I didn't see the original message as it was posted when work was really busy).
